Hawkwind have had more than 50 members, with only founder and guiding light Dave Brock remaining a constant. Among those who’ve passed through the Hawk portals include Lemmy, Robert Calvert, Ginger Baker and Michael Moorcock. And let’s not forget exotic dancer Stacia, or the Liquid Len light show. Hawkwind’s stock is probably higher now than at any time since the 1970s – they’re still creating fresh music, and they’ve also reissued their most acclaimed albums, introducing these classics to a new generation. Pictures Of You follows the release of Portable Door last month, and is part of a digital EP that includes that song alongside live versions of When A Blind Man Cries and Uncommon Man, recorded live at the Mediolanum Forum di Assago in Assago, Italy, in October 2022. Previously unseen footage of Eddie Van Halen jamming with Leslie West and Corky Laing at a club in Los Angeles has emerged online. The clip comes from a Mountain show held at the House Of Blues in West Hollywood, CA, in August 2002, and shows Van Halen joining the band onstage for a version of Never In My Life, from Mountain’s 1970 album Climbing. @officialthewho frontman Roger Daltrey has laughed off the prospect of the band ever being the subject of a hologram tour. When asked by UCR if he thought The Who could ever recreate something similar to the @abbavoyage show, Daltrey at first appeared perplexed, saying: “What, we’re going to go out and do ABBA covers? I don’t think so. I’d look fucking awful in a mini dress!” Two years after it was originally announced, a release date for the fourth album by Detroit legends the MC5 has been announced. Heavy Lifting, the follow-up to 1971’s classic High Time, will be released via earMusic on October 18, the day before the band are inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. A single, Boys Who Play With Matches, is out now. @robertplantofficial and @alisonkrauss have released a live version of When The Leveee Breaks, first recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. The original lineup of Jane’s Addiction played together in London last night for the first time since 2010, with guitarist Dave Navarro recovered from his Long Covid. Appearing at London’s Bush Hall, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins plasyed to 400 fans, and premiered a new song, Imminent Redemption. Jane’s Addiction split just one year into the 90s and they’d already done as much as anyone to define the decade. If your antenna was fixed on right 1988-90, Jane’s Addiction were the best band in the world, the bridge between Van Halen and alternative rock. Here was rock music that schmooshed together Van Halen and The Doors, with a bass player who taught himself to play by listening to Peter Hook on Joy Division and New Order records and a drummer who grew up with jazz and Motown, got into metal and then discovered Joy Division and the Banshees. They were the greatest band of the 90s who never actually existed in the 90s. Instead, Jane’s invented the fucking 90s. With the launch of Lollapalooza, Perry Farrell brought together what he called the “alternative nation”: rock, punk, goth, hip-hop. It took underground music mainstream. They just weren’t around to reap the rewards. Last night? They were epic. Perry looks like Peter Capaldi’s Malcolm Tucker but dressed as, I dunno, an air steward. “I hear there’s an election coming,” he says. “Do not vote for that conservative prick.
