Many years ago I sent my dad a newspaper clipping when @flatlandcavalry made the local newspaper and he wrote back to me: “As you become a household name let fame go to your heart and not to your head.”
Well, Padre, it took ten years but thanks to the @acmawards and @amazonprime our name and music was just introduced to millions of folks watching at home. We did not take home a trophy but I still feel like a winner nonetheless.
Truly it is a honor and privilege to be nominated for Group Of The Year— one that I take to heart! 💛

Went to my first concert when I was 17 years old to see @randyrogersband in Odessa, TX. Left that evening galvanized, knowing that songwriting and performing was what I wanted to do after seeing multitudes of common folks like me transformed into blissful creatures; inspired, loving life and living in the moment.
Since have had the honor and privilege of writing with Randy and we made a little @flatlandcavalry ditty about letting the good times roll.

I’ve flipped burgers, cleaned pools, and bussed tables; dug ditches in unforgiving, sun-baked West Texas caliche; climbed heights on questionable scaffolding, wrestling against gravity, fear & vertigo with a plate of glass shaking in my hands; built and sold road cases out of my garage with only a SKIL saw and make-shift (mostly) straight edge; all in pursuit of making an honest living with my hands— as my parents taught my brothers, sisters and I to do. As their parents taught them to.
As much reward as it is to see a job get completed— to see nothing turn into something; the work described always felt like toil because it was devoid of love.
Since the days of falling in love with my work, my entire life has changed for the better. Every discovery of myself and others through songwriting; every heartfelt fan interaction and stranger I meet; every new town, city, venue, restaurant discovered feels like the reward of walking in faith towards the unseen realm where our dreams reside.
There’s truth in the old adage, “Anything worthy of attaining does not come by easy.” Sure, my circadian rhythm has been dismantled and there are days when weariness tempts me to retreat to a simpler way of earning a living, however I wouldn’t trade making things I love with people I love for anything!
@flatlandcavalry has been hard at work for almost ten years and just got nominated for an ACM Award for ‘Group of The Year.’ Truly an honor to be recognized for getting to do what you love. Thank you, from one dreamer to another.
