The EU has reapproved the use of glyphosate – an extremely harmful pesticide – despite our request with PAN Europe & others to reconsider. We’ve proven that the safety check for this approval was flawed and ignored scientific findings. Glyphosate has been associated with carcinogenic, neurotoxic and endocrine-disrupting effects, and is hugely harmful to nature and wildlife. Our lawyer, Hélène Duguy, said: “The Commission is doubling down on its decision to re-approve glyphosate despite the fact that it is legally required to act with caution to prevent harm to humans and nature. We won’t hesitate to take this matter to the EU’s highest court to get the Commission to comply with its own rules.”

A new report from Planet Tracker is warning that industries who produce plastic are ‘dumping’ the problem of plastic pollution onto consumers by pushing recycling as its solution. The report shows how successful these companies have been in their campaign to make plastic pollution our problem to solve, as well as how they have been misleading the public for years when it comes to recycling. Though recycling has a role to play in dealing with plastic waste, it is nowhere near an adequate solution to the global problem of plastic pollution. The only way to deal with the problem is to stop plastic production at the source, which is the responsibility of companies and industries. Head to our bio link to take action.

In a big win for UK climate action today, a landmark ruling from the UK Supreme Court will make it more difficult for fossil fuel projects to go ahead. The UK’s Supreme Court ruled that the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels must be taken into account when deciding whether or not to approve projects, in a case fighting the construction of a new oil well in Surrey. Campaigner Sarah Finch had previously challenged the decision taken by Surrey County Council to extend planning permission for the well. Currently, ‘downstream’ emissions (those that are created by the use of a company’s products) aren’t being considered in planning decisions, but this case has changed that. This decision follows the advisory opinion given by international ocean court ITLOS, which said that states everywhere should be considering these kinds of emissions when they look to approve new industrial and construction projects. Rulings like these send a clear message to authorities across the globe: the full scope of the environmental impacts of fossil fuel projects on the climate can no longer be ignored. “This clear decision from the UK Supreme Court changes the game for planning decisions: it irons out expectations on authorities and makes it clear that companies and authorities have to account for downstream emissions. This judgment is a legal triumph and we congratulate everybody who worked towards it.” Sophie Marjanac, ClientEarth

Greece is facing its first climate lawsuit ⚖️ A group of environmental organisations are looking to get permits for a new gas facility cancelled, as the project will sit on a marine protected area. The environmental impact assessment also did not consider the emissions that the facility will produce, damaging the climate further. The European Court recently ruled that governments must prevent climate change impacts on human health, and Greece is already experiencing record high temperatures and rising sea temperatures.

🚨Greenwashing alert🚨 Coca-Cola, the exclusive drinks distributor for the Paris Olympics, has stated its commitment to halving the amount of single-use plastic at the event compared to London 2012, promoting its fountains, returnable cups and glass bottle initiatives. But funnily enough, it has failed to mention the fact that nearly half of the drinks in these cups will be poured from... plastic bottles. This is yet another example of Coca-Cola's dubious environmental claims. Last year, we supported action against the company for its misleading recycling claims. Link in bio for ways to take action.

🐠It's #WorldOceanDay 🌊🦑The ocean is the largest carbon sink on the planet and produces 50% of the oxygen we breathe. It's also a key source of food and income for coastal communities. The ocean is always hard at work to protect the planet, and us. In return, we use the power of the law to protect it – finding ways to give it space to recover and replenish.

Greenwashing corporates should watch out 🚨 The head of the UN has said that fossil fuel industries should be banned from advertising to help save the world from climate change. UN Secretary General António Guterres said coal, oil and gas corporations had distorted the truth and deceived the public for decades, and that just as tobacco advertising was banned because of the threat to health, the same should now apply to fossil fuels.
