Happy 100th Birthday to the indomitable @pollyallenmellen While its been years since I have seen her, when I look back at the fashion legends I have worked with over the years, Polly is among them. I never saw anyone brought to tears seeing beautiful clothing on a runway before or since. To say she cared deeply would be an understatement and yet she surprised us all when she stepped away from the magazine world. She was the first Vogue Fashion Editor I worked with when I was 16 and traveled to Paris and Cannes to shoot the collections with Denis Piel along with @tatjanapatitz . We also worked together for @michaelkors for this ad campaign photographed by @stevenmeiselofficial . They broke the mold, as they used to say. #pollymellen
I am officially an “empty nester”today! How do I feel about it? Ask me in three months, after my baby has moved out of our home and settled into his college dorm across the country. For now, I just want to share how grateful I am. Grateful that me and my child have reached this milestone. Every day is a gift, especially when in good health and when we feel safe and well supported. I know by now that life and our experiences are fleeting and that what’s truly important is to make meaningful connections in this lifetime. I want to thank all those who have loved and supported my kid along this wondrous journey so far. You all made it more fun and rewarding every step of the way. So, here is to whatever is outside of the nest and to embracing as much of it as we possibly can for as long as we can from here. Congratulations, Finn & LREI Class of ‘24! Here’s the backstory: Christy Turlington Burns led about 15 of us on a learning tour of maternal health clinics in Tanzania in March and somewhere in there, I got obsessed. The thought I kept coming back to, a thought I’d had before, is a mother dying is a big deal. We do so much. And most of the deaths are preventable. It’s not one of those problems we can’t figure out how to solve. And here I was meeting the OBs and the delivery nurses and they were magnificent in both their devotion and their expertise. So I wondered with Christy if somehow the podcast could help. In the blink of an eye, we had recruited 5 friends to talk to us about their mothers as a way of reminding everyone what’s at stake with maternal health. Today we begin with Jen Garner whose mom, Pat, raised her to put family first, love the land and all its fruits and do what you can do to help out, everywhere you go. I love Jen. She is a very special person. So come on along for the next 5 days. And help me help Every Mother Counts.
