CulturalDC presents “The Rose Garden: Green Room” by John Jarboe @johnjarbeaux , an immersive exhibition filled with video, music, and sentimental items to connect the visitors to the light-hearted memory of John’s consumed twin, Rose.  Dear You,    Have you ever been told that you ate your twin in the womb?   That’s what my aunt told me when I came out as trans.   It gave me a lot to digest.   My twin’s name would have been Rose, and this exhibition is dedicated to her. Explore, sing along, rest, and relax here for as long as you like.   This is only one piece of The Rose Project, a garden of videos and performances I grew especially for You, my fellow trans folx, queerdos, and genderful ones, and for our guardians and caretakers.  I hope this space feeds and nourishes You or, at the very least, leaves you chewing on some tasty puns.    Love,   John and Rose  Make sure to stop by the Opening Celebration on June 8th from 4-7 PM. After catching the Capital Pride Parade, make your way over to Woolly Mammoth for tasty treats and beats by @wxxds.x ! Experience the exhibition at 7th and D St NW (In front of Oyamel) @oyameldc , and enjoy activations, including “Rose’s Closet”, sponsored by The DC Center for the LGBTQ+ Community, as well as a cozy writing station where the community is welcome to write letters to their gender. We’re proud to announce our partnership with Heron Alexandria! @hotelheronalexandria As the curator and arts partner at Heron, CulturalDC will curate quarterly exhibitions at the hotel’s new location in Old Town Alexandria. ‌ You’re invited to the Opening Reception + Artist Talk of our inaugural exhibition: ‌ “Metal and I, Want the Same Thing” by Mercedes @mercedes_theartist ‌ Opening Celebration: June 29, 7-9 PM ‌ Heron Alexandria 699 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA ‌ Join us for an evening exploring Mercedes’ work through conversation, wine, and bites. ‌ Through kinetic sculpture, sound, and performance, Mercedes creates rituals of liberation and mourning. Mercedes asks the question: how is melting down and transforming weapons a queer act? Like the queer body, metal is in a constant state of shapeshifting. Mercedes’ work meditates on queer vulnerability and material transformation. ‌ Link in our bio for more info.

Have you seen our Lincoln in the news lately? He was featured on the cover of the Washington Post yesterday, but also across the world. It seems “40 ACRES: Camp Barker” has gone viral! We were shocked to hear from our international friends of Lincoln’s fame far and wide. “40 ACRES: Camp Barker” by Sandy Williams IV was created to spark discussion about Lincoln and his legacy, but we did not expect all of this! Read about the origins of the 40 ACRES Archive and Camp Barker on our website (link in our bio), and stay cool out there. @sandywilliams_iv @washingtonpost @ndtv @bbcnews #waxlincoln #risingtemperature #climatechange #melting #meme #viral #civilwarhistory #reconstruction #lincoln #abrahamlincoln #ushistory

WE CAN NOT WITH THIS HEAT EITHER, LINCOLN “40 ACRES: Camp Barker” by Sandy Williams IV, @sandywilliams_iv installed at Garrison Elementary in Shaw, has been attracting a lot of attention lately. With multiple days of 100+ heat, Lincoln couldn’t stand the heat, and we are all with him. His slouched posture is so relatable as we enter the election season while trudging through climate change. The 6 ft wax sculpture has recently gained some fame as people have created viral images and are commenting on how they relate to his stance (for innocent reasons and some not so innocent). Read the interviews with the artist for yourself, links are live on Sandy’s page on our website: BBC @bbcnews FOX 5 DC @fox5dc New York Magazine @newyorkermag NEWSWEEK @newsweek WASHINGTONIAN @washingtonianmag WASHINGTON POST @washingtonpost WJLA / 7News DC @7newsdc WTOP @wtopnews Featured twice this week on @washingtonprobs *Content warning - Saucy Articles!* *The Chive @thechive *Gizmodo @gizmodo *Out Kick @outkickthecoverage … and more! Shout out to the mystery friends who straightened his head early yesterday morning and to the photoshop masters of r/photoshopbattles for our favorite memes of this viral trend. @maxellcorp His head has been removed purposely to keep it from falling and breaking. We are working with the community and Garrison Elementary to determine the next stages of this sculpture and CulturalDC’s contribution to the 40 ACRES Archive and the Wax Monument Series. Whether it’s the state of the union, the upcoming election, or this record-level heat, we are all over it! This conceptual art piece called “40 ACRES: Camp Barker” by Sandy Williams IV @sandywilliams_iv has caused a lot of buzz lately. This 3,000 lb wax sculpture is intended to be burnt like a candle and to change over time, but this wild heat has done a number on Lincoln. The wax used’s congealing point (where it begins to harden or melt) is 140 degrees, but with this record-level heat, Lincoln has slumped into his chair more than ever anticipated! All that wax is leannnnnnnning back under the weight of 2024 and the state of our warming planet! The Washington Post’s @washingtonpost recent report is a stark reminder of the urgency of the climate change issue. DC has experienced its earliest  100+ degree day since 2011, a clear sign of a long and hot summer to come. The article warns, “The expectation is that there will be more days at or above 100 annually as the globe warms due to human caused climate change.” This is a call to action for all of us to do our part in combating climate change. Update about this project: So you know, our staff purposely removed Lincoln’s head to prevent it from falling and breaking. We are currently working to figure out the next stage for “40 ACRES: Camp Barker,” but in the meantime, we hope you’ll visit our website to learn more about Sandy’s “Wax Monuments” Series and “40 Acres Archive” as well as our other installations in the DMV. We can’t guarantee he’ll be sitting up straight for the months ahead, but who really will be? Thanks for the share @washingtonianprobs #dcarts #heatwave #climatechange #overit
