This cabinet card portrait of George Karlavagn —who was often advertised as the only stage performer tattooed by electricity— impressed audiences with the three evocative words “Tattooed by O'Reilly'' on his back. The portrait is from the studio of Charles Eisenmann (1855–1927), a well known celebrity photographer during the 1880’s and 1890’s in New York City’s Bowery District, who not only photographed celebrities like Mark Twain and Annie Oakley, but also was known for his portraits of “human oddities,” such as sideshow acts and people with birth defects.
