#HappyPrideDay
The history of the professional wrestling industry & the lgbtq+ community is a complex one to say the least. It was common practice for decades to utilize extremely broad stereotypes of gay men in particular to draw “heel heat” from fans. One of the biggest heels of the early television boom period (early ‘50s) was Gorgeous George. George Wagner was a straight man who played a flamboyant character with over the top effeminate traits. He was a huge draw during his era but it could be said that much of that was due to the negative feelings people had towards a gay or feminine man.
In the years since promoters and fans have embraced the wrestlers of the lgbtq+ community due to their in ring abilities, charisma & microphone talents. The following is a selection of 10 athletes from that community who’ve made their mark in the business. I can’t claim to be a member of the community but I do wish all who are celebrating today(& did so throughout June) a Happy Pride.
Today it's not only the last day of June, but it's also the last day Pride month. And today I want to take the time to appreciate some of my favorite individuals that represent the LGBTQ+ community in the world of wrestling. I got nothing but love and respect for anyone that represent this community, and to see them kick all kinds of ass (all kinds) all across the country being who they are, I respect that even more. And if anyone that follows me has a problem with me giving them their flowers, F*** You!!! #PrideMonth#Pride#LGTBQ
