Connecting someone with a defibrillator after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is crucial. The possibility of survival drops significantly after 5 minutes. Dr. Monique Starks, associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine, is the author of a newly published study that modeled the potential impact drone delivery of AEDs might have on response times for OHCA. The study, which included historical OHCAs between 2013-2019 from 48 counties in North Carolina, found that a network of drones combined with first responders universally having AEDs, could increase the percent of OHCAs with a response time of less than five minutes from 16% to 56.3% with a median time of 4.8 minutes compared with historical response time of 8.0 minutes. Check out a demonstration of the AED drone delivery in the video. The results were published in the journal JACC Advances. ASK Day – June 21 marks the first day of summer, a time when many children are out of school, spending more time at home and at the homes of others. Parents ask all types of questions before their children visit other homes. ASK Day is when we remind parents, guardians, and caretakers to add one more question, by asking: "Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?” It’s estimated that 250 fewer children would die each year as a result of suicide and unintentional shootings with only a 50% increase in the number of gun owners who store their guns safely. See more about ASK Day: See link in bio. Reference: (Monuteaux, Azrael, and Miller 2019). #gunlocks

Duke Heart for Honduras, a medical-mission program launched in 2018, allows a dedicated team of Duke medical volunteers to partner with surgical teams in Honduras to help save lives. The program has two goals – to provide access to heart surgeries for Hondurans who would otherwise not receive it, & to help support local Honduran medical teams in their efforts to treat patients with valvular and other heart diseases in that region. Learn more about the effort: See link in bio. @DukeHeartHonduras | #HeartSurgery | #HeartDisease | #DukeHeartCenter
