Merry Christmas! I’m hoping for some northern lights this midwinter, so here’s some mythology for you! Many northern cultures have myths about the northern lights; the old Norse features several but I think my favourite is that it’s caused by the Valkyries riding across the sky fetching the dead to Valhalla. Beware and stay out of the way, or you may be taken by mistake! Yes, I’m on Cara too now! For those of you who are unfamiliar with it it’s an art-focused app similar to Instagram but without the stealing-your-art-to-train-ai-bits. Since I’m based in the European Union I have the legal right to opt-out (tell them they’re not allowed to use my stuff) and have successfully done so. But artists in most other regions of the world have none such opportunity and many are looking for a new place to post their art. I will keep posting on Instagram as I do now (i.e. maniacally during Inktober and sporadically the rest of the year). And I will keep a portfolio on Cara and post there occasionally as well; while enjoying the art of my non-European friends. #cara #caraart

Harald Hårfager (Harald Fair-of-Hair), the first king of Norway. This spring I’ve been working on a really fun commission, consisting of a family tree and a series of small portraits to go with it. The client’s family go right back to the kings of Norway, Isle of Man and even William the Conqueror. Eventually it transcends into mythology (Odin etc), so we included that to just because it’s a great story. — #norse #portrait #norway #viking

Another pose from @brightanimation All in Gesture class with Rey as mermaid, but I turned this into a full illustration without Star Wars theme. I had so much fun doing this, spending some time experimenting with real, physical paint for once. It been a long time since I used watercolour and I’m very happy my sense of colour in the digital world was so easy to apply irl as well. But it was an absolute nightmare to photograph; the blue is supposed to be a lovely, deep teal but both my camera and scanner turned it into a greyish mess. Tweaking it towards blue was the best I could do, so that was a bit disappointing. Ink+gouache=👌 I’m slightly obsessed with this yellow at the moment (though the photo doesn’t show HOW yellow it really is, it’s too much for the camera).
