Canon's history began in 1933 when Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida, and Takeo Maeda founded the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in Tokyo, Japan, aiming to develop high-quality cameras to rival European brands. In 1934, they introduced the Kwanon, Japan's first 35mm focal-plane-shutter camera, establishing their reputation for innovation. The company became Precision Optical Instruments, Co., Ltd. in 1937 and registered the Canon trademark the following year. Notable innovations include the world's first x-ray camera in 1940, the Pocketronic calculator in 1970, and the award-winning Macro Zoom Lens K5x25 in 1971. The name "Canon," derived from their first 35mm camera, signifies "holy scripture" or "standard of judgment," reflecting the company's commitment to setting global standards. As of 2022, Canon has ranked in the top five for U.S. patents granted for 37 consecutive years and was named one of Fortune Magazine's World's Most Admired Companies.
