I created a new show on Complex called That's Deep, hosted by Yedoye Travis. Today, we debuted the first episode with guest Earl Sweatshirt.
I wanted to make a show that feels like those existential conversations about life you have with friends in a basement at 2am. I'm very excited about it. I hope it'll make you laugh.
Many thanks to everyone on the team who helped make this happen! Episode out now on Complex’s YouTube channel
SoundCloud rap didn’t die. It reinvented itself. I spent the past few months reporting on the wildest, most exciting music scene on the planet right now: rap’s new underground.
Going to shows in cities across America, I spoke with a new generation of artists who were inspired by the SoundCloud rap era of the mid-2010s, and reinvented the scene in their own image. SoundCloud is no longer the driving force of the underground (it’s been replaced by apps like Discord and TikTok) but the same rebellious energy remains.
This is a story about the internet, the pandemic, and a whole generation of kids who are in desperate need to release a historic amount of pent-up energy. It’s a story about the most fascinating new subgenre in music. Read it on @Complex . Link in bio.
