Here comes the end of it all. Last episode of #truedetectivenightcountry - and a big shout out to three people who inspired and helped me on this journey. In order of appearance: @gronsky aka Alexander Gronsky, whose photography series „Endless Night“ offered me a first entry into this world of darkness. @utsimartin aka Florian Utsi Martin, head colourist at ARRI, who built a LUT and a texture for me and who is a generous maverick in the world of colour. And last, but never ever the least: @colourkitten aka Jet Omoshebi, colourist @goldcrest_films , with whom I spend 2 Month grading all of this for broadcast as well as beautiful premiere prints of Ep 1 and 2 in 4K and Dolby Vision. 2024 here we come. A long journey that started in July 2022 and finished in April 2023. Many cold nights in Iceland surrounded by many people with warm hearts. Dear Terence, As many times before, you were on my mind today. I remembered our first encounter when you were looking for a cinematographer to shoot “The Deep Blue Sea.” I recall our shared appreciation for Jon Houston’s “The Dead.” And I remember how, at the end, I asked your manager and friend, John Taylor, whose unconditional support must have carried you through all those years when things were not going easy, if I should send references of my work. John just politely replied, “No, Terence does not work that way.” Working with you was like going to church. It was an act of devotion. I loved the fact that all the films you enjoyed seemed to have been shot before I was born. I cherished our misunderstandings (one time you referred to “Encounters,” and I thought you had meant Spielberg’s “Close Encounters” when you had actually talked about David Lean’s “Brief Encounter”). I loved when you yelled “bravo” after a successful take, and I cherished your tears when we watched rushes, and you would turn around to me and say, “How beautiful.” I had talked to John a couple of days ago and wanted to come and see you, but now it seems you left... maybe in the same way that you made all your films, in your own time and on your own terms.#terencedavies #florianhoffmeisterbsc #cinema #loveletter #thedeepbluesea #aquietpassion

My own personal highlight at the academy awards. I had a brief encounter with a man whose work has inspired so many of us - and in this moment I am trying to say how much his work has been an inspiration to me. Not only the genius visual richness of his images - but his own personal handwriting palpable in all his films - something that encouraged me from the start to search for my own voice. I actually feel completely overwhelmed on so many levels! Many years ago, when I got drawn into the art of filmmaking, it were the films that enabled me to ask questions that inspired me most. Todd script and his vision as a director tapped right into this love and I consider it a true honour to have worked alongside him and Cate on a journey that asked us to disappear and let the film carry itself. Sometimes it is really difficult to be really simple. And to be recognised for this is as much an honour as it is overwhelming right now. Florian Hoffmeister is a prolific director of photography. Recent works by Hoffmeister include his lensing on the Apple TV+ series Pachinko, the critically-acclaimed political thriller Official Secrets starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, and Matt Smith, and the forthcoming film TÁR starring Cate Blanchett. Hoffmeister is well-known for his collaboration with Terence Davies on feature films The Deep Blue Sea, starring Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russel-Beale, and A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon and Jennifer Ehle. His work on Brian Kirk’s television phenomenon Great Expectations earned him further distinction as well as numerous accolades, including a Primetime Emmy, a BAFTA, and an ASC Award.
