We rotate the eggs just like mama goose does in the nest! We start doing this on the 7th day by hand several times daily until the 25th day. Rotating the eggs allows the embryo to encounter fresh nutrients and oxygen inside the egg. Rotation also prevents the developing chick from sticking to the shell. #Sebastopolgeese #goslings #hatchingeggs #incubation

Our Sebastopol breeding season 2024 is over. We sold our last gosling today to a beautiful local farm! This season had many ups and downs. We launched our Fly Away Home Farm website, focusing on helping others from all over the world hatch this beautiful threatened species by creating our own Goose Incubation Guide. We met many amazing people that traveled to our farm from Canada, Michigan, NY, PA, NC to pick up our goslings. Some of our goslings went to local farms, and we are excited to visit them! Thank you to everyone that was a part of this season! Most of all, big thanks to our geese Maui, Lucy and Marley for being a part of our lives. 🐣 #Sebastopolgeese #sebastopolgoose #flyawayhome #goslings #incubator #incubation #petlovers

When i first got my Sebastopol geese eggs to hatch in May 2018… little did I know the hatching challenges and adventure it would bring to our lives! i researched and read everything I could on goose incubation. I joined various Sebastopols groups on facebook. Still, nothing could prepare me for the challenges of hatching geese eggs, especially purebred Sebastopols. There is one person i met through a Sebastopol group , He is an experienced Sebastopol breeder and well known in our Sebastopol community. He taught me EVERYTHING i know today on incubation, egg anatomy, hatching emergencies, raising sebastopol goslings to adulthood. When i panicked during hatching emergencies… he was always available to guide me through it 🐣 . Over the past 6 years, I have hatched over 80 goslings from my 3 Sebastopol adults: Maui, Lucy and Marley. Over 80 goslings that have grown up and continue to populate this beautiful threatened species. Our farm and goose story has been on our local news tv, published in various media outlets and magazines. I wrote a Goose Incubation Guide that is published in @backyardpoultrymag 🐣. Fly Away Home Farm exists and has become what it is today because of Matt Kmetez of Breezy Knoll Farm. I am honored to call him my mentor and friend. Thank you Matt 🐣#Sebastopolgeese #sebastopolgoose #goslings #hatching #sebastopolgoslings #incubation

DISCLAIMER: Do not attempt to assist a hatch without consulting an experienced breeder *Emergency Assisted hatch* This gosling pipped the opposite side of egg, into the membrane layers which contain blood vessels and veins. She should have pipped into The air sac (cell) on the opposite side! Luckily i caught this in time before she suffocated or drowned from the internal liquids. This was one of the most challenging hatches. I slowly peeled away shell and membrane.. as soon as i saw blood.. i stopped for a few hours before proceeding again. each time I opened the incubator I had to blast it with more humidity- I knew the yolk would have issues absorbing into her bc i assisted ( yolk absorbs when baby does all the hatching by itself) . i got her head and neck out of the egg but left lower part of her intact, inside of egg, with a warm wet paper towel around egg so yolk could absorb. (Keeping the yolk moist is key or it won’t absorb resulting in death) Hours later she broke out of the egg on her own, trying to stand and walk! The yolk absorbed but her bellybutton wasn’t closed fully! i put Neosporin on it, and back in the incubator til her bellybutton closed! #sebastopolgeese #goslings #hatchingeggs #backyardchickens #backyardducks #geese #goose
