🗽 American history is on display now at the Folger! First Lady Abigail Adams had a habit of quoting Shakespeare in her letters, as she does in this 1816 message to Catherine Elizabeth Rush. Tap the link in our bio to learn more about Adams's letter and to find more American history on display, including the first work of poetry published by an African American writer, an advance press copy of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, an Apollo 11 flight plan signed by Buzz Aldrin, and more. The Folger is closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Visit folger.edu/passes to reserve a timed-entry pass for July 5 and beyond! #FolgerFinds #ImprintsInTime #IndependenceDay #July4th

On display now in our Shakespeare Exhibition: Kawakami Otojirō (1864 – 1911) was a well-known Japanese actor and comedian whose troupe performed in Japan and toured Europe and the US. Later in his career, his company became interested in performing Western plays in Japan. In their 1905 production of Hamlet, Kawakami played the ghost of Hamlet’s father. This photo is drawn from a 1905 edition of The Sketch, a weekly British newspaper. Its caption reads, "The Ghost—Oto Kawakami—makes his appearance in the cemetery of Aoyama just outside of Tokio [sic]. He is clad not in armor, but in full dress uniform!—a star on his breast, his sword at his left hand, and his hair disheveled." #FolgerFinds

"May I trouble you to send just a line, for information, as to what is meant by the expression 'Air-Conditioning?'" When the Folger was being built in 1930, founder Henry Folger was dubious about the idea of air-conditioning the whole place. Thankfully, in 2024, we don't share his skepticism, and the AC will be on full blast when we reopen our doors tomorrow!
