It's #insectweek and I promise I tried REALLY hard to narrow down some faves, but there were over 900 images this year so far 😂 so here's a montage medley!
...This gal has done the biggest 180° because I used to be scared of (honestly most of) these creatures, especially if they were ON me. That's the progress we like to see. HUG A BUG TODAY... They're beautiful, they're fascinating and they're important, so let's all try to show them some more love! (Did you know there are three times more species of insects on the planet than the sum of all other animal species combined?)
I'm loving seeing everyone's posts.. not included here are at least 800 more images including spiders, weevils, caterpillars, bees and oh so many more cute, floofy, creepy and chonky marvels! Plus those GIANT insects I met last week 🥲 #tinyworlds#nature#insects
Freaky frilly Friday with some rosecomb mutation action! I found a ring of what I believe are Spring Fieldcaps (Agrocybe praecox), growing around a tree, when I happened to notice a trio of strangely capped ones. I'm not sure what causes these mutations, but the textures are amazing, especially when the gills grow from the wrong direction! #freakyfungi#fantasticfungi#ukfungi#springfieldcap#rosecombmutation
It's a #weewednesday and a #waspwednesday with the teeniest little jewelled beauty I ever did see! One of the ruby-tailed wasp species having a little nap(?) on one of our apple trees. I've read that these are also known as 'Cuckoo wasps' as the females lay their eggs in the nests of other solitary bees and wasps... they can also curl up into a ball as a defence! Maybe this one was just being camera-shy, but I made sure to tuck the leaf away again... What a little gem! #tinyworlds#insects#rubytailedwasp#allotmentlife
The sunny intervals lead to some very welcome encounters yesterday 😁 a nice bit of variety for #fungifriday and some excellent bonus content!
Any corrections on 🆔️ welcomed as many of these seemed surprising:
1- 3. Neottiella rutilans (I think, but growing in the right environment). Both the colour and texture are delightful!
4 & 5. Velvet Bolete (Suillus variegatus) ...shocked to find, especially in June -my first Bolete of the year!
6. Tawny Grisette (Amanita fulva), another surprising June discovery
7. Green Brittlegill (Russula aeruginea)
8. Four-spotted Chaser (Libellula quadrimaculata). Oh I have missed the dragons so much...
9. Snake skin - thrilled to have found some that managed to survive the gusty weather! 😁
10. Common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) -relieved to finally meet one of these elusive reptiles again so close to home
Had another wonderful time catching up with an excellent photographer friend who's been such a kind supporter of all of my pursuits (and nerdiness!) Shout-out @tony_cooper_photography 🙌

Here's some more non-fungi content* because I'm really loving all the gorgeous sights around the meadow at the moment 😍 the 5th of June is also apparently #worldenvironmentday 💚 let's all hug a bug (especially the Caterpillar #6 )
1 & 2. Bee Orchids (Ophris apifera) ...I look forward to seeing these delights every year with their little faces of glee!
3. A female Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus)
4. A Burnet moth cocoon (Zygaenidae sp.)
5 & 6. Orange-tip caterpillars (Anthocharis cardamines)
7. Burnet moth caterpillar (Zygaenidae sp.)
8. Common Malachite beetle (Malachius bipustulatus)
9. Buttercup haven
10. A male Common Blue 😍 (Polyommatus icarus)

Happy #slimemouldsunday ✨️ there's plenty of gloop around at the moment that's pretty easy to spot 👀 the neon yellow is Scrambled Egg/Dog Sick slime (Fuligo septica) and the white blobby stuff is still in the plasmodial stage but could develop into something like Stemonitis sp. (wish I could go back and check because it's my favourite... but that's what @this_forest_floor reckons and she is the Slime Lord)! If you take a time-lapse of this stuff you can see it pulsing and morphing and it's the weirdest and coolest thing... provided it survives the slugs, of course -they seem to be scoffing EVERYTHING this year
