It is time for fungi to be recognised and protected on an equal footing with animals and plants in legal conservation frameworks #saytheirname 🙌🏽 Language creates reality, and including the word “FUNGA” in your language is important. Whenever referring to the macroscopic diversity of life on Earth, we should use “flora, fauna and FUNGA”, and “animal, plants and FUNGI”. You, as individuals and organizations, can join friends like @janegoodallinst @paulstamets @kristine_tompkins @itspetergabriel @michael.pollan @david_zilber and thousands more to become a part of the 3F movement by using mycologically-inclusive language and signing the statement at . By integrating “funga” into our day-to-day conversations, educational material, media and social media vocabulary, etc, we lay the groundwork for fungi to be protected on an equal footing as plants and animals. The Mazatec tradition and historical use of plant and fungal medicines are integral to the international renaissance of interest in psychedelic medicines. Rediscovered after 40 years! The Big Puma Fungus (Austroomphaliaster nahuelbutensis) was found in Chile’s Nahuelbuta Mountains by the Fungi Foundation and Fundación Nahuelbuta, thanks to the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and other donors. The expedition retraced mycologist Norberto Garrido’s 1980s footsteps, 40 years to the day he originally discovered the big puma fungus, leading to a thrilling find. This rediscovery was made on the 6th day of the expedition during a community hike and later confirmed by DNA analysis in the lab. The Fungi Foundation released a short film by Chilean filmmaker Catalina Infante, capturing the awe and excitement of the expedition, including the unforgettable moment when the team, alongside the local community, rediscovered the elusive Big Puma Fungus. No organism lives alone 🌍. Plants, fungi, animals, and bacteria interact in a web of life where each has its place. The fungi kingdom sustains the ecosystems that make life on the planet possible by associating with plant roots, decomposing and returning nutrients to the soil for other organisms to use, and, as in the case of Stephanopus stropharioides, serving as food for animals! 🐌 This is probably one of the most striking species of the Andean-Patagonian forests. 💙 How can you recognize it? It has a bluish-green color and a viscous cap with white scales. The center of the cap is ochraceous, and the spore print is rusty brown. New documentary! 🎥 “In Search of a Lost Fungus” follows a team of mycologists from the @fungifoundation - led by @danifungi - on their expedition to the Nahuelbuta mountain range in Chile, searching for the Big Puma Fungus (Austroomphaliaster nahuelbutensis), a species that had only been documented once by Chilean mycologist Norberto Garrido in the 1980s. 🔎 The expedition team found two potential candidates—one of them discovered with the help of local mushroom enthusiasts. The samples underwent DNA analysis, comparing the mushrooms collected in May 2023 to the DNA of the original mushroom Garrido collected more than 40 years ago. After several months, a molecular analysis by Francisco Kuhar (@franfungi ) shown that the two were the same species.
