Martin D35 vs Martin D45 I am playing part of my original song “Crossroads” on these two awesome guitars, a Martin D35 and Martin D45. The cost difference is enormous, with the D35 coming in around $3400 and the D45 at about $10k. I was playing at the Guitar Center in Nashville. Which do you prefer? (My guitar at home is a Martin HD28, which I purchased at this same Guitar Center about one year ago.) “Speed of the sound of Loneliness” by John Prine as covered by Nanci Griffiths Written by John Prine and recorded first on his 1986 album, it has been covered by many other artists including Kim Carnes and that reached number 70 on Millboard hot Country Songs. Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds and Molly Tuttle covered it in their concert in Cancun concert 2023. (I could not find a professional recording of it, but it sounded great with Molly’s unique style of playing and singing.) However, I discovered this sonic the Duet with Prine and American Singer Nanci Griffith. It was on her 1993 album Other Voices, Other Rooms. This was her 10th studio album, it consisted entirely of cover songs in a tribute to songwriters she found inspirational. This album won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and it also won a grammy for production. Nancy Griffith died at the age of 68 in 2021 in Nashville. Cause of death is unknown but her amazing body of workalikes on. Slides are cut up into verses and choruses so you can tap Thru! “Sweet Lorraine” by Patty Griffin Cover Patty Griffin is an American Singer songwriter & musician. She has won two Grammy awards. One for best Traditional Gospel in 2011 and for her self-titled album in 2019 for Best Folk Album. “Sweet Lorraine” is a song from her first album “Living with Ghosts” that debuted in 1996. She is known for her stripped-down song style mostly in the folk music genre. She has been covered by many artists from Emmylou Harris to The Chicks to Bette Middler to Linda Ronstadt. Her music has been featured in many films and TV episodes. In fact, “Not Alone” off her debut album was featured in the final scene of the 1997 film Niagara, Niagara and in the TV series Crossing Jordan. She’s appeared in several moves including the Cameron Crowe movie “Elizabethtown” which also includes her song “Long Ride Home.” As usual, I have presented this in a carousel so you can page through it and hopefully hear the highlights. Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd In between working on originals, I played a few covers and this ended up being a 10 minute jam of Sweet Home Alabama. Totally spontaneous, the lighting in the evening with the sun behind me was horrible. I tried to do my best to correct it. Hopefully the fun of this jam on one of this epic song will make up for the video. I am presenting one of the many acoustic riffs first because I played this cover before, and I think the people who are really interested in this content, are fans of hard core acoustic playing with honest (unmanipulated) vocals. To get the light “bed room pop” strumming sound, I strum at the back of the sound hole, with a very light touch on the strings, often just using thumb and index finger. (Slide 3) A second approach would be to use a pick and you get an entirely different vibe (Slides 2 and 4) Which do you prefer? Since 2023 started, I got wrist tendinitis on one side, followed by the other, then a finger injury. When I can’t play, the music gets bottled up. I changed my room around so the audio isn’t the best and these were spontaneous recordings. So the other day when my hands were okay, I sat down to play and played all these songs for the first time: Page 1 - original acoustic riff Page 2 - Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine Page 3 - An Italian Gothic rock ballad called “Coraline” by Maneskin Page 4 - “Doin This” by Luke Combs “Ceilings” is current a viral trend over on “the other platform”, it’s a lovely ballad by Lizzy McAlpine “Coraline” was released in 2021, in some parts of Europe it went double platinum. This is a very cool song on the order of Bohemian Rhapsody imho. You can see I am reading the lyrics, apologies to my Italian friends. “Doin This” by Luke Combs was released in 2021. This song seem to follow me everywhere when I got to Nashville last year. The first song I heard when I got my car and went for a drive, it greeted me in almost every store I walked into. And in a way I feel it tells my story. “Someone asked me once..what would you be doing, if you weren’t doing this?” And the answer is “I’d still be doin’ this, if I wasn’t doin’ this.” The night I did these, I did one other cover I will save for later, one of my originals and four solid song starts in the course of playing about 2 to 3 hours. And afterwards, my finger was back in a splint. But for those of you following my story, when I got to the Luke Combs song, I think I found “my voice.” More on that later. One Year Guitar Progress I started playing guitar on October 2, 2021 I thought it would be interesting to compare how I was playing in October, 2021 to how I played by October 2022 Slides - The first four slides contain original music that I wrote 1. Intro with a new instrumental original piece I wrote the other night 2. Me playing the end riff of “Too Beautiful” in October, 2022 3. Me playing part of the song “Snowing Outside” in October, 2022 - you can hear a little bit of me singing and notice a big difference from the year before 4. Me playing part of my Original “Crossroads” a bluesy update to Robert Johnson’s Crossroads - playing 11 months here 5. Day 8 of playing - Jewel’s “You were Meant for me” notice that my first song was fingerpicking 6. Day 9 of playing - The Fray’s “How to Save a life” 7. Day 16 of playing - Creedence Clearwater Revivals “Have you ever seen the rain” 8. Day 20 of playing - Nicks and Henley’s “Leather and Lace”, First time on a 12 string I fell in love with guitar and was playing about 5 hours a day. I would visit guitar shops a lot, so that’s why I am playing so many different guitars This was somewhat labor intensive to put together, but I think it tells an interesting story. I will try to do a month by month carousel. It will show that around month 4 my skills really accelerated. But Guitar was pretty much all I was doing.
