Spotlight on Na Chainkua Reindorf (@ncreindorf ), the artist behind the Tompkins Square Park basketball court refurbishment 👩‍🎨 Reindorf is a Ghanaian-born multidisciplinary artist with a deep interest in world-building and mythmaking through the art of the masquerade. “Within [the] fictional world which currently serves as my ongoing practice, seven distinct and unruly female characters are imagined through different media, ranging from paintings and tapestries to costumes and large-scale installations. The work I make is intended to serve as a referential visual lexicon... [which] brings to life and slowly transforms from fiction to reality, the lives of these entities. In fashioning these masquerade avatars, I hope that they can inspire alternate possibilities of being, unencumbered by social pressure.” —Na Chainkua Reindorf “Gaze,” the piece featured on the courts at Tompkins Square Park, depicts a stylized eye, a recurring symbol in Reindorf’s work. Four years into our partnership with the @WNBA , we’re bringing beauty and basketball together again, supporting a court refurbishment at Tompkins Square Park in downtown Manhattan 🏀 We teamed up with renowned artist Na Chainkua Reindorf (@ncreindorf ), community nonprofit Project Backboard (@project_backboard ) and the New York City Parks Department (@nycparks ) to redesign and refurbish these courts in our local community. This felt like a full circle moment for us in more than one way: Na has starred in some of our previous campaigns (Skywash and Hand Cream!) and our Stretch Complexion campaign featuring the women of the WNBA was shot on the Tompkins Square Park basketball courts. A huge thank you to our teammates on this project — Na, Project Backboard, the New York City Parks Department — we’re proud to keep celebrating beauty made for real life, championed by the women in sport who inspire us.
