🏳️‍🌈🦄 There's extra power in our pride this month with two exhibitions that celebrate creativity, color, and joy! 🫧 "In Conversation with the Cosmos" is the first comprehensive survey in the United States dedicated to the late Filipino artist David Medalla (1938–2020), an influential figure in twentieth-century art. Medalla's identity and sexual orientation were at the core of his artistic thinking from a young age. 👔 Our first-ever fashion-forward exhibition, "Refashioning," presents two project spaces from transdisciplinary artists and fashion designers, Concept Foreign Garments New York @cfgny2 and Wataru Tominaga @wataru_tominaga . 👗The exhibition challenges preconceived notions of gender and identity, and in particular what the artists describe as “vaguely Asian” aesthetics. 🌈🎨 Come celebrate beautiful art that reflects the beauty of love in all its forms! 🗓️ Join us on June 8 for our summer exhibition opening party! Both exhibitions open to the public on June 9. #HappyPride , everyone! 😘 #LoveIsLove

"Refashioning" artist Wataru Tominaga @wataru_tominaga is a designer and color maximalist. ❤️💚🩵💛 While some pieces of clothing—kimonos, for example—are associated as feminine attire, Tominaga's runway pieces and designs push away from gendered forms vibrantly. 😍 Marvel at the kaleidoscope of colors and materials the artist uses to represent wild queerness that challenge feminine and masculine conventions.

☁️ David Medalla's ever-changing "Cloud Canyons" mobilizes an arsenal of tiny soap bubbles that slowly seep and ooze from clear plastic tubes and wooden structure. 🫧 While the sculptures may not be overtly sexual, they convey a glimpse of Medalla's sublimated desire that permeates his sixty-plus years of art making and can be understood as an embodiment of desire. 🏳️‍🌈 As #PrideMonth comes to an end, we remain committed to celebrating the vibrant legacy of Medalla and the inspiring work of LGBTQ+ artists past, present, and future.

These fashion-forward “vaguely Asian” pieces as described by CFGNY and Tominaga are a must have for any refashionista 🧸🐛 👜 Available in-store only Now- August 4 CFGNY is a New York based fashion-art label that began in 2016 as an ongoing dialogue between Tin Nguyen and Daniel Chew on the intersection of fashion, race, identity, and sexuality. CFGNY continually returns to the term “Vaguely Asian”- an understanding of racial identity as a specific cultural experience combined with the experience of being perceived as other. Wataru Tominaga is a Tokyo based fashion and textile designer, best known for his distinctive textiles using vibrant colors and patterns. Tominaga designs unisex garments that feature playful motifs and graphics inspired by wide-ranging time periods and cultures.

💋 Jordan Strafer’s @jordanstrafer video installation of "Loophole" and "Decadence"—the first two chapters of a planned trilogy of videos—portrays the American legal system in a state of heightened spectacle at a time when it became difficult for television audiences to distinguish between reality and fiction. 👩🏼‍⚖️🇺🇸 Take a seat on one of our Nicoletti sofas and watch as Strafer explores the potential for filmic narrative to address the power relations implicit in gender, sexuality, and American identity. 📲 Discover all the tantalizing details when you visit us next or on our website.

👂🏼Listen closely when you stand next to CFGNY's @cfgny2 4-channel multimedia installation, "Time drags and seems to stand still," created for our "Refashioning" exhibition. 🗣️🎙️The audio is a mix of World War II Japanese internment camp interviews. People are talking—or mumbling—over one another, representing cultural and familial fracturing. CFGNY's works on view—clothes, textiles, sculpture, film, and photography—deconstruct, recreate, and decontextualize gender, race, and culture or subculture.

🇵🇭 In conjunction with "David Medalla: In Conversation with the Cosmos," join us this Thursday evening to watch "The Kingmaker." 🎥 Director Lauren Greenfield @greenfield_lauren will be in-person to discuss her documentary of Imelda Marcos, a powerful female leader whose questionable sense of reality divided the Philippines. A Filipino artist, Medalla's work often explores the areas of political art and community. He was very vocal in his opposition to the Marcos regime and the American power that backed it.

✨🏳️‍🌈💗Love and affection are often on the periphery of art history. Desire and passion permeate "David Medalla: In Conversation with the Cosmos." 😍🎨 The dreams David Medalla had for artwork that breathes, perspires, winks, and pants often came to life through the collaborative bond he shared with Adam Nankervis. 😮🥵🫠 "The Mondrian Fan Club," founded by the artists to honor Piet Mondrian, combined Medalla and Nankervis' personal and professional lives, forging a decades-long romance. 🌈 During #PrideMonth , witness love through Medalla's photographs, sculpture, video, and ephemera.
