Becoming a good dance photographer takes plenty of practice and a good base knowledge of understanding dance technique- but it’s not too difficult to learn!
Here are just five things that I think are important - though there’s plenty more!!
1. Timing - for dance photography timing is crucial. Snapping at that 100th of a second in time when a grand jeté is at its peak takes tons of practice!
2. Lighting - this is a big one and is crucial for any successful portrait! Understanding light and how to use it is the foundation of all photography.
3. Technique - A solid understanding of dance technique and terminology is crucial. You don’t have to be a dancer to be a student of dance technique and terminology - you can learn!
4. Communication - speaking clearly using words dancers of all age levels can understand matters! Using the phrase “point your nose right at my camera” instead of “look at me” can be the difference in getting the face perfectly lit and even instead of getting partial light on the face and getting that side eye that is never very flattering. Using dance terminology they understand for clear communication for what you are asking makes a big difference.
5. Have FUN!!! This might be the most important part. When we look at a photo of ourselves we instantly and maybe even subconsciously remember the feeling or emotion connected to that photo. If my dancers are not enjoying themselves and having fun, the emotional connection to their dance portraits will not be pleasant ones. Being able to connect with your client on a personal level, helping them feel confident and that you are a safe place can go a long way in how they feel about the final product.
