Tracking what you eat and drink can be a powerful tool for making sure that you're getting in the right amount of calories and macronutrients that you need every day. But for most of us, tracking isn't something we need to all the time. For many of my clients, we track calories and macronutrients mainly when we're trying to make a change. Once you have a good sense of how much you need to eat of the different food groups to meet your goals every day, and this eating pattern is well established as a habit, you can generally begin to track less.
🥦
As an alternative to tracking every day, you can also do the math and calculate roughly how much of the different types of foods you'll need to eat every day to meet your calorie and macronutrient goals. In this way, you shoot for reaching a general goal for how many sources of protein, how many cups of vegetables, how many grains-based foods you can eat every day. This works well for many people as a more refined strategy based in the MyPlate Model.
🍏
At the end of the day, you have to choose the strategy that's most helpful for you. Tracking isn't something that helps everyone (especially if you have a nervous or anxious relationship with food). If you would like some help cleaning up your diet and finding a strategy that works best for you, check out the link in my bio for my Healthy Diet Makeover program!

Exercise can be a great way to manage your stress. But I know one of the most difficult parts though is mustering the willpower to start. Be kind to yourself and do what you can. Avoid setting difficult-to-achieve goals and focus instead on low-cost-of-entry modes of exercise (like walking or Bodyweight exercises). High intensity exercise could backfire, making you feel worse and making it hard for you to recover—so be careful not to push too much too soon when you’re getting started. If you miss the comradely of working out alongside others, check out the outdoor training programs in your area! And above all, remember to be kind to yourself. Mental illness IS illness, and beating yourself up over it is like flogging yourself for catching a cold. It’s ok to feel how you feel, and it’s OKAY to feel like you’re struggling. You’re a living creature under massive amounts of stress. Do what you can, when you can. And when you can’t, forgive yourself, take some deep breaths and ask for help. There are people who love you (like me!), and there are people who have lots of amazing advice and strategies that you can learn and use to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Take good care of yourself—you’re the only one of you 💕 .

I’m so so proud of my friends and clients who have been going out to stand up for the reform our country has needed for too long. Please wear your masks and wear them properly while marching! We don’t want covid to reduce the number of voices calling for justice—especially considering that this illness has disproportionately affected the people of color that we’re standing up for! .

If going out to March isn’t an option for you—you can still make a difference! Lots of organizations are taking volunteers for digital work and making phone calls to get this reform passed! @grassrootslaw is one of them so please do your part and do something!
