June 16, 2024. Fathers day for my dad. What a great honor to be handed this award from friend and mentor, the legendary Wendell Pierce. This is award is the makeup of many, the hard work & love of many. Mom & Dad & my brother Klay, and my partner Biko. My team. This is For Harlem. For Belize. For COMMUNITY, the ANCESTORS, my tribe, the village that raised me and have supported my dreams. Its the cosmic brew of many spirits. Both past and present. Every teacher. I think of Lynda Gravatt, Ron Cephas Jones, Craig muMs Grant, Ray Ultarte, & Netic, I think of Hazel Baptist & my grandfather David Jenkins. I think of OSSIE DAVIS & RUBY DEE who are the literal giants who've done the work to make it easier for us black artists. I think of the work and all the roles Ive had the honor of stepping into. I think of the beginning. And looking back, I would have never imagined I would be working with Leslie Odom Jr, Kenny Leon, Heather Alicia Simms, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Billy Eugene Jones, Jay O Sanders, Noah Robbins, Bill Timoney, Noah Pyzik, Melvin Greg, Donald D Webber, Willa Bost, & Brandi Porter. To our producers @natblacktheatre . This historical moment is bigger than me. I cherish the love. I cherish the support. I would have never entered the broadway space had it not been for Lynn Nottage & Kate Whoriskey. I would have never came back a 2nd time had it not been for Martyna Majok & Jo Bonney. This 3rd Consecutive historical nomination for a black performer- being Ossie Davis & Kenny Leon has me at a loss for words but filled with gratitude. I think of Ossie & Ruby and all the other black artists who were never acknowledged for their work. I am honored I get to honor black women on stage. LUTIEBELLE GUSSIEMAE JENKINS -originated by Ruby Dee in 1961 and Melba Moore originated the musical version called “Purlie”- for which she won the Tony, this character, Lutiebelle follows her heart and goes on a journey with Purlie who is preaching & fighting for the freedom for all mankind, Lutie is like: I have life to live and I want join the fight for liberation, in the name of LOVE. We all deserve the right to live. A vibration for the liberation for all of humanity.

Always a pleasure to be of service to the elected officials of @nobcoinc and introduce our new Financial Literacy Initiative at this year’s Membership Meeting. Had the honor of creating this program along side Finance Expert @edmundfordjr . It meets the fundraising, educational, and philanthropic needs of our communities across the nation. Looking forward to the launch event on Juneteenth in Shelby County-Memphis, TN! . Additionally, if you are interested in bringing this program to your region, county, state or organization please contact support@nobco.org. #NOBCONation #NOBCOStrong 💪🏽🇺🇸 (📸cred: @jemalcountessphotography )

Join us TONIGHT at 4:30pm for the opening reception of “Tears of Wollega”, an intimate approach, captured by Jemal Countess, to the horrific genocide occurring in Western Ethiopia through the expressions of the people it has affected. Don’t miss the chance to hear Jemal recount his experience in Ethiopia and share his wisdom as a documentary photographer. “Women currently residing at the Silsa Internally Displaced Peoples' (IDP) camp line up for aid provided by Islamic Relief - Ethiopia on March 24, 2022 in Silsa, Ethiopia. The TPLF renewed attacks on the Afar region in January of 2022 attacking and currently occupying 6 Woredas after having retreated on multiple fronts in December of 2021. The woman seen here are some of the over 43,000 occupants of the IDP camp at Silsa who came from the 6 woredas invaded by the TPLF. Adequate food and water along with proper sanitation are major issues at the Silsa IDP cam. According to Kamil Humed, Deputy Manager of the Afar Development Association the recent attacks have increased the number of Internally Displaced People (IDP's) to 350,000 spread across 14 sites in Afar.” @jemalcountessphotography #artgallery #photography #documentaryphotography #ethiopia #wollega #art

Being of service to this nation's most influential elected officials, who tirelessly serve our communities on a daily basis, fills me with immense pride. I want to express my gratitude to the speakers, guests, and members whose contributions led to the success of this year’s NOBCO Annual Meeting. Next stop is DC for #CBC then Mecklenburg County - Charlotte, NC for #2023NOBCOConference this Fall! Hope to see you there!
