Over the next couple weeks I’ll be sharing some tips on how to mix an incredible low end. Here’s part 1!
It’s couterintiutive, but often the best way to create a great low end is to remove low frequency from the mix. Rather than immediately boosting the bass and drums with EQ, the first thing I did was remove any unncessary low end from other instruments. This helps add clarity to the mix, gives more headroom, and also makes the bass and drums sound more full because there’s less energy competing with them. It’s a simple idea, but this is an amazing technique! Just by adding a few highpass filters or low shelves in the right spots, we can make the low end tracks sound more full and powerful, without even having to touch them.
This can be a great starting place for the low end, so when we do actually start adding plugins, the drums and bass already sound good and we don’t have to overprocess them.
