안녕하세요! 지난 6월 13일에 진행되었던 KAANY의 필드트립은 Field Operations와 SOM의 협업으로 새롭게 완성된 하이라인 익스텐션 프로젝트였습니다. 이와 더불어 KAANY가 진행하고 있는 시도지사협의회 해외연수의 주요 내용인 하이라인과 허드슨 야드에 대한 설명과 뒷이야기들을 소개해 드릴 수 있어서 기뻤습니다.
이 익스텐션 프로젝트는 매스 팀버를 이용하여 지어진 맨하탄의 첫 번째 프로젝트이자 인프라스트럭처입니다. 허드슨 야드의 높은 건물들과 가장 큰 Brutalism 건물이었던 버라이즌 사옥 사이를 잇는 Wood Bridge는 높은 밀도의 철과 콘크리트에 둘러싸인 우리에게 앞으로 맨하탄의 변화를 보여주는 시작점처럼 느껴집니다. 2021년 이후로 미국에서는 270FT(18층)까지 그리고 뉴욕은 85FT(7층)까지 매스 팀버를 이용한 건물이 허용되었습니다. 많은 프로젝트들이 매스 팀버를 사용할 것을 고려하는 지금 단계에서 외부에 노출된 매스 팀버 구조물을 직접 볼 수 있다는 것이 뉴욕에 살아가는 우리의 가장 큰 자산이 아닐까 합니다. 앞으로도 더 많은 가능성을 가지고 있는 매스 팀버가 어떤 모습을 보여줄지 기대됩니다.
이날 더운 날씨에도 불구하고 많은 분들이 참여해 주셔서 다양한 토론과 함께 각자의 프로젝트에 관한 이야기도 들려주셨습니다. 앞으로도 KAANY의 필드 트립이 다양한 토론의 장으로 자리매김하길 바랍니다. 많은 관심과 참여 부탁드립니다.
Hi, there! The KAANY Field Trip held on June 13 was a newly completed High Line Extension project, a collaboration between Field Operations and SOM. Additionally, we were pleased to introduce the main content and behind-the-scenes stories of the High Line and Hudson Yards, which are key parts of KAANY’s overseas study tour for Korean provincial governors.
This extension project is Manhattan’s first project and infrastructure built using mass timber. The Wood Bridge, which connects Hudson Yards’ tall buildings and the former Verizon headquarters, the largest Brutalism building, feels like the starting point that shows us the future changes in Manhattan, surrounded by high-density steel and concrete. Since 2021, buildings up to 270 feet (18 floors) in the US and 85 feet (7 floors) in New York are permitted to use mass timber. At this stage, where many projects are considering using mass timber, being able to see exposed mass timber structures directly is perhaps the greatest asset for those of us living in New York. We look forward to seeing the possibilities that mass timber will bring in the future.
Despite the hot weather on that day, many people participated, sharing diverse discussions and stories about their projects. We hope that KAANY’s field trips will continue to serve as a platform for various discussions. We look forward to your continued interest and participation.
지난 5월 KSG(KAANY Sustainability Group)는 Stone Barns로 필드트립을 다녀왔습니다. KSG는 카니의 소그룹 중 하나로, 다양한 분야의 지속 가능성을 스터디하며 건축과의 연계를 모색하는 모임입니다. 이번 필드 트립은 Agriculture & Food를 주제로 뉴욕 근교에서 운영되고 있는 혁신적인 농장인 Stone Barns를 방문했습니다. Stone Barns는 1920년대 록펠러 가문의 유제품 농장으로 시작했으며, 2004년 데이비드 록펠러가 부지를 기증하면서 공공에 개방되었습니다. ‘공공을 위한 농업 교육과 유기농 농법 발전의 추구’라는 비전을 가지고 운영되고 있습니다. 현재 유명한 친환경 레스토랑인 Blue Hill과 함께 Farm to Table 다이닝을 연구하고, 코넬 대학교와 함께 생태 농법을 연구하는 등 다양한 활동을 하고 있습니다.
KSG 팀은 이번 필드트립을 통해 방목으로 키우는 양떼들을 보며 생태 축산에 대한 설명을 듣고, 주방에 들어가 갓 만든 음식을 맛보며 Farm to Table 과정을 몸소 느껴볼 수 있는 시간을 가졌습니다. 이후에는 Stone Barns에서 생산된 신선한 재료로 준비된 음식을 먹으며 멤버들이 준비해온 사례 조사를 공유하는 시간을 가졌습니다.
날씨가 좋아 기분 좋은 소풍을 다녀온 것 같았던 이번 필드트립은 친환경 농업을 경험하며 다양한 의견을 공유하는 알찬 시간이었습니다. 다음에도 유익한 필드트립으로 찾아뵙겠습니다!
Last May, KSG (KAANY Sustainability Group) went on a field trip to Stone Barns. KSG is one of KAANY’s small groups that studies various fields of sustainability and explores connections with architecture. This field trip focused on Agriculture & Food, and we visited Stone Barns, an innovative farm near New York City.
Stone Barns started as the Rockefeller family’s dairy farm in the 1920s. In 2004, David Rockefeller donated the property, opening it to the public. It operates with the vision of “promoting public agricultural education and advancing organic farming methods.” Currently, it collaborates with the renowned eco-friendly restaurant Blue Hill on Farm to Table dining and conducts ecological farming research with Cornell University.
During this field trip, the KSG team observed grazing sheep and learned about ecological livestock farming. We also entered the kitchen to taste freshly made food, experiencing the Farm to Table process firsthand. Later, we shared case studies prepared by our members over a meal made with fresh ingredients from Stone Barns.
With the great weather, this field trip felt like a pleasant outing. It was a valuable time to experience eco-friendly farming and share diverse opinions. We look forward to more enriching field trips in the future!
KAANY 멤버들이 5월 9일부터 12일까지 열린 New York Focus Art Fair에 초대받았습니다. 2024 NY Focus Art Fair에서는 여러 종류의 폐기물로 만들어진 설치 예술품들과 다양한 주제로 이루어진 한인 아티스트들의 작품들, 또 참여해주신 패널분들의 대화가 굉장히 인상 깊었습니다. 오염된 환경에 대한 문제들을 예술가들의 시선으로 바라볼 수 있는 좋은 기회였습니다. KAANY에서는 이와 같이 건축 관련 분야뿐만 아니라 다른 여러 예술 분야 단체들과도 좋은 관계를 맺고 있습니다. 이번 KAANY와 Focus Art Fair의 파트너십을 주선해주신 김규린님께 감사 인사를 전합니다. 김규린님은 현재 KAANY의 멤버이며 Focus Art Fair에서 head of public & communication으로 활동하고 있습니다. 참고로 다가오는 10월에는 런던 사치 갤러리에서 Focus Art Fair가 열린다고 하니 관심 있으신 분들은 많이 참가해주세요. KAANY는 앞으로도 Focus Art Fair의 성공적인 행보를 응원합니다.
Our KAANY members were invited to the New York Focus Art Fair, held from May 9th to 12th. This year‘s New York Focus Art Fair featured impressive installation art made from various waste materials, works by Korean artists covering diverse themes, and engaging panel discussions. It was a great opportunity to view issues like environmental pollution through the eyes of artists. KAANY is building strong relationships not only with organizations in the architectural field but also with various other art-related organizations. We would like to thank Gyurin Kim for arranging this partnership between KAANY and the Focus Art Fair. Gyurin Kim is currently a member of KAANY and serves as the Head of Public & Communication at the Focus Art Fair. Additionally, the Focus Art Fair will be held at the Saatchi Gallery in London this coming October, so we encourage those interested to participate. KAANY sincerely supports the continued success of the Focus Art Fair!

안녕하세요. 카니에서 한국문화원 신관 개관을 기념하여 오랫동안 공들여온 태극기 게양 프로젝트가 드디어 완성되었습니다. 건물의 이중 파사드 사이 공간과 이를 지탱하는 구조물을 이용하면서도 좁은 도로 때문에 보행자들이 양 측면에서 건물을 사선으로 바라보고 접근한다는 점을 이용해서 보행자들의 시선에서 점진적으로 태극기가 완성되는 색다른 방식을 제안했습니다. 한국문화원 신관의 건축적인 특징을 유지하면서도 태극기를 강조하기 위해 많은 실험과 고민을 한 만큼, 건축적인 접근법으로 만들어진 태극기를 즐겁게 봐주시고 사진도 많이 찍어주세요. 혹시나 잘 나온 사진을 찍으신다면 카니에 제보해 주시기 바랍니다!! 마지막으로 그동안 고생하신 카니의 문화원 팀과 한국문화원의 민형은님께 감사의 인사를 전하고 싶습니다.

We are pleased to announce that KAANY’s long-awaited Taegeukgi hoisting project, commemorating the opening of the new annex of the Korean Cultural Center, has finally been completed. By utilizing the space between the double facade of the building and its supporting structures, we proposed a unique way for pedestrians to gradually see the Taegeukgi form as they approach the building diagonally from both sides of the narrow street. This approach not only maintains the architectural characteristics of the new annex but also emphasizes the Taegeukgi. We have conducted numerous experiments and put in much thought to achieve this, so we hope you enjoy the architecturally inspired Taegeukgi and take plenty of photos. If you capture any great photos, please share them with KAANY!

On May 16th, KAANY held its 11th ArchiTalk at the USAI Lighting showroom. Thanks to Juhee and James, the founders of River Architect, we had a valuable opportunity to rethink sustainability and traditional Korean architecture.
This ArchiTalk was conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participation from people outside New York and in Korea. KAANY will continue to strive to enable more people to join future events.

KAANY is hosting a special lecture in celebration of our Architecture Forum this Spring. Professor Jong Soung Kimm, a distinguished fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the Korean Architects Association, will be presenting a lecture on one of the pioneers of modern architecture, Mies van der Rohe’s architecture, and its relevance today. Many of us are already familiar with this figure from our school days through textbooks, so we are eager to hear what insights Professor Kimm will share with us.
