Lady Liz Taylor Here, Real Talk Time… A major portion and mission since I started drag 7 years ago, was the intention to not disconnect Matthew, my humanity from the character- Lady Liz Taylor. A lot of performers prefer to keep those to separate. And keep have the ability to keep those separate. I do not. Drag is an art form and I have never been capable of not making my art personal. I have only been able to create art & drag with the feeling, sensations and experiences I am going through in that moment. I have always been incredibly insecure about my body and shameful of my sexuality. And I don’t mean my sexuality in terms of being gay or queer, I mean shame in regards to allowing myself to be sexy and sexual. Throughout high school and into my late 20’s I’ve struggled with self harm, bulimia & binging and purging. I am in a better place now but still struggle with so much insecurity about my body. Although Lady Liz Taylor is a character I created. I created her out of my head. I created her out of my past, my present and how I want my future to be. I created her out of my desire to be confident and sexual but not feeling it. So although she may be a character, she’s a character and extension of me. And in these pictures I see her and I see me. You may think it’s trashy. You may not like it but I don’t really give a fuck. I am sexy, I am confident, my body is beautiful. I am beautiful. I am enough. This is art. This is me. Happy Pride. Happy Pride Month Everyone. I think the rainbows & glitter ironically enough, have given us rose coloured lenses. I love that Pride has become a celebration, a party- with joy, expression and diversity. However, I deeply believe the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is losing the true core of the meaning of Pride & more significantly have forgotten the history of Pride. The capitalist influence on Pride has taken us away from its truth. Changing your social media profile picture with a rainbow flag to promote your business and profit off of OUR lives, is not allyship. We must take Pride back. Eat the rich. Pride did not start as a party. Pride did not start as a celebration. Pride was AND STILL IS a revolution. It began with violence, riots and protests. A black trans woman and her bravery to say enough is enough. We are human and we will be seen. We have a lot of work to do. We must protect our trans family, especially our trans youth. We must protect drag and the queer art we produce and not allow us to be censored. We must protect and acknowledge the intersectionality of identity- and recognize our privilege and the devastating disproportionate amount of hate & discrimination directed specifically to black, brown and indigenous folks. We must demand for cease fire now. We must stand with innocent civilians of Israel, Palestine, Gaza & Ukraine caught in the crossfires of a vicious and abhorrent war. And this is just a small fraction of the atrocities taking place in the world right now that we must stand together to unite against to protect that sanctity of human life and authentic expression. So, this Pride, wave your flags at the parade. Celebrate yourself & the community. Paint each others faces with rainbows and glitter. Go to a drag show and dance the night away with sweat dripping down your face. But never forget. Never forget what’s been done, what is happening and most importantly what must still be done. Message on this last day of Pride Month My first ever pride celebration was in 2015. I was 19 years old. Still in college. Living downtown thought I had myself all figured out. Small town kid, big city dreams. Little did I know what the next decade of journey and discovery would bring me. Since then, I’ve grown and taken a journey I never expected. I came out as queer, I came out as a drag queen, I came out as nonbinary. I received my diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and adhd. I had nothing figured out like I thought. And now, on the cusp of 30, I’ve realized I’ll never have myself figured out and that’s not by any means, a curse. It is the greatest freedom in the world. We are human, we are meant to grow, change and evolve and step into our true selves & I think I’ll be doing that the rest of my life & that no longer scares me, it excites me. So on this June 30 2024, the last day of Pride Month, I just want to remind you all of something we all already know. Pride is incredible because it shines a spotlight on our community. But Pride doesn’t stop at the stroke of midnight. Even after this day ends, we are still our queer selves. We are still Cinderella at the ball. So harness that magic and bring it with you all year long. Now that we’ve celebrated, it’s time to get to work. From Lady Liz Taylor and the Cult of Love, thank you again to anyone that supported us throughout this month, this month has surpassed dreams I hadn’t even conceived in my head or thought were possible. Thank you. I love you. And to my friends…. There aren’t words. I feel as though I have finally found my chosen queer family, a community- which is something I have never had. So thank you. Thank you for loving me, supporting me, partying with me, crying with me and above all else, providing the space for me to BE ME. I love you more than words can say. Happy Pride Everyone!
