Missy Elliott - Da Real World (1999). 25th Anniversary. After the success of her classic debut album "Supa Dupa Fly (1997)", Missy Elliott became one of the hottest rappers out at the time with her many dope rhymes, futuristic beats by Timbaland, and her "out of this world" music videos, which are considered iconic in today's time. Missy definitely felt the pressure of recording her second album as she felt it would be a tough challenge to top the success of her previous album and not wanting to fall victim to the "sophomore slump" curse that tends to happen to lots of artists. Missy further elaborated in an interview, "I can't even explain the pressure. The last album took me a week to record. This one took me almost two months, I couldn't rush it the second time because people expect more." Originally, Missy was going to title her second album as "She's a B*tch", explaining that the word "b*tch" is how she expresses herself in a positive way as a "strong woman in power". "Da Real World" was a project that definitely took a lot of risks by having such a dark and mysterious tone to it as it felt like the listeners were stepping further into the future as the album progressed. "Da Real World" was released in 1999 during the "Y2K" era, a time when artists were trying to portray this futuristic, spaced-out feeling to their music as we were approaching a new millennium when it reached the year of 2000. "Da Real World" most definitely captured the whole "Y2K" era theme and you can tell that the Missy and Timbaland were heavily inspired by "The Matrix (1999)" which was released a few months prior to Missy's second album. "Da Real World" was also dedicated to the victims of the "Columbine High School massacre" which occurred a few months prior to the release of this album as well. "Da Real World" is just one of the many examples of Missy Elliott being so iconic and legendary as she has gone on to do bigger and better things in her career which would eventually pay off as she's considered to be one the greatest rappers of all time. Here's to 25 years of "Da Real World" 🌏 #MissyElliott #DaRealWorld #HipHop
