As many beloved L.A. eateries close their doors, Café Tropical in Silver Lake defies the trend. Originally opened in 1975, the cafe faced closure due to a family dispute. However, regulars, who cherished its potent Cuban coffee and iconic guava cheese pastries, rallied together to save it. New owners Ed Cornell, Danny Khorunzhiy, and Rene Navarrette have revived the spot with a slightly revamped menu and minimal decor changes, preserving the cherished neighborhood vibe. The new owners come from diverse backgrounds – Cornell is a D.C. ice cream entrepreneur, Navarrette a permit consultant, and Khorunzhiy a hospitality newcomer. According to Cornell, the goal was never to overhaul but to restore. With a fresh coat of paint and repaired equipment, Café Tropical has once again opened its doors, serving familiar faces and maintaining the longstanding community feel, including AA meetings in the back. Read the full story at the link in bio.
