“Here’s the place that I learned the most.” Since graduating from YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) in 2019, Cal State Long Beach student Nathan looks back on how the LA Phil’s music education program helped build his confidence, improve his tuba performance, and get ready for the bright future ahead of him. One of the most exciting moments of this course has been the #ChordsOfHarmony meeting in Barcelona. We share with you some of the best memories! Sixteen-year-old Ayde holds a lot on her plate, from school and music to family responsibilities at home. But through YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), the LA Phil’s music education program, she’s found a safe space to dream big, express herself, and make progress toward her long-term goals. Last month at the YOLA Beckmen Center, we celebrated our newest YOLA graduates, their time in the program, and their future plans—all 49 students will attend college in the Fall. Renee, a flutist who spent two years in YOLA, said: “I just really love being part of that community and feeling so uplifted.”

On May 22, Oliver was among the 49 graduating seniors being celebrated during YOLA’s Soirée. After seven years playing the viola, Oliver says he’ll take with him “the times I spent with my instrument. Even though it’s not a human being it feels like a part of the family.”
