The Reset group exhibition at the National Theatre, now open at Lyttleton Lounge. Thanks to everyone that came last night to celebrate the opening 💙 About the project: Myself, @maxmiechowski and @callum_su were commissioned by @nationaltheatre in collaboration with @itsnicethat to capture the three hours backstage between shows, know as 'the reset' - the time the stage assistants and backstage staff are busy preparing for the evening shows. We were each asked to approach this in our own way. When I developed the film from the recce, I was drawn to the humorous tone and human presence within the photos. I made a small edit and started to think about how they revealed something curious and unexpected. I am often drawn to every day moments and objects and I liked how these fleeting and accidental placing of props after shows, revealed something of backstage life and the people working there. I decided to capture the series across all three theatres, shooting like I did on the recce with on-camera flash to capture the chaos of fleeting moments. I revisited multiple times throughout May, each time seeing the backstage in new ways. Themes began to develop, seeing the screens showing stage rehearsals and props being reset, the clocks marking the passing of time. I was surprised by the humour in these objects, how they reveal the traces of human touch. I began to think about creating graphic grids of taped arrows and colourful chairs, the markers used to direct the cast backstage and communicate during live shows. The CCTV screens gave an alternative view of the stage, a different perspective like a play behind the play, this is what I found so intriguing and was drawn to capture. Coming to the end of a long term project shooting my grandparents and their home in Kent. Now they've passed and the house is being emptied for sale, I saw it for the first time, stripped back to wallpaper and carpets. With just the marks of life left behind. I think my love of colour must come from my nan 🧡
