National Indigenous History Month is such an important month for me as a proud Indigenous Iskwew. I am so honoured to be invited to play for 3 of the communities I grew up in as a child. When I was young I grew up through a time of poverty not even having clean clothes or sometimes food to eat. In and out of foster care I longed for any activities that were free and took me away from the negative things that were going on at home and around me. Im now proudly able to provide and promote an Indigenous fashion show where children get the opportunity to step out of there shells, wearing my clothes and clothes lent to me by local Indigenous artists to give the children a chance to be brave and walk the runway ! This not only brings confidence to our children but also teaches them proper respect and recognition amongst peers and elders. Growing up between the age of 5-11 years old I lived in the small community of Athabasca, Alberta. I watched the Native Friendship Centre being built and played one of my first guitars at one of their camps offered at the centre. I am so happy and honoured to return here and perform for the beautiful community of Athabasca ! ❤️ I moved to the small hamlet of Smith, Alberta eventually where I went to school until moving away at the age of 18. I am beyond thrilled be providing the second fashion show and performance not just for the school but for the entire community ! ❤️ For the last 14 years I have called Edmonton’s Treaty 6 Territory home. I love the city and the people and I am so excited to come back to Our Lady Of The Peace Elementary School for their first Indigenous Fashion show!
