“What doesn’t break you makes you.”
Modernist and Romantic Vision of Femininity with the subtle but ingrained signature of John Galliano: diaphanous bias dream of undulating flowing tiers, draped decollates, sheer and sensual.
“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.”

When John Galliano unleashed his inaugural collection as the head designer for Givenchy, he knew he needed to make a statement as the front of the conventional French House and, more notably, as the designer tasked with resuscitating it. The opening looks of Galliano’s collection are a tribute to 19th century court dress, and more importantly, the provocatrices of the ruling imperial class.
With a gown both regal and radical, Galliano nods to the trailblazers of centuries past, including the scandalous narcissist the Countess of Castiglione, arguably the best dressed woman of the 19th century, and the Marchesa Casati, the revolutionary, incendiary, ephemeral spectacle of the 20th century who would serve as a recurring muse for John. The message is clear: this design is for the wearer who dares equally to intimidate and inspire.
Though polarizing, Galliano’s conviction in diverging from convention defines him as the most transformative designers of the 21st century — in his own words, “one has to make a fuss to make the right people take notice.”

Medusa is neither a monster nor a temptress. She is a guardian and protector, who turned the male gaze against them. Medusa is a deeply desirable woman. Medusa has become an iconic femme fatale, embodying both beauty and danger.
Caravaggio’s Medusa is a woman wronged and a woman damned. Her evocative gaze forces us to confront systems of power and justice. Medusa is a default allegory for the hatred of women. Who else is better suited as an icon for the feminist movement?
The beheading of Medusa is potent illustration of violent misogyny: once Perseus kills Medusa, his hatred is not quenched. He holds up her head as a trophy, crushes her ruined body beneath his feet. He who fights monsters, said Nietzsche, should take care he doesn’t become one himself.
Be thankful women only want equality, and not payback.
ART IMITATING LIFE
Fashion is a canvas reflecting Culture. Designers interweave disparate modes of creativity and demonstrate the fundamental permeability between discursive categories.

Claudia Schiffer was Karl Lagerfeld’s muse.
Chanel codes had gone viral and the house was at the center of the fashion galaxy. Vogue deemed Spring 1996 Couture so spectacular that “Ode to Coco,” a stand-alone Irving Penn portfolio was dedicated to the collection.
Slide 4-5: In 2017, Marine Vacth became the new Chanel ambassador and Karl’s muse. Twenty-one years after this look was runway shown, Karl Lagerfeld handpicked Claudia’s dress for Marine to wear to the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of her film L’Amant Double.
