PLAYWORLD by the brilliant Adam Ross doesn’t come out until January (Preorder it now!) and one of the few things I know how to be grateful for is getting early copies of phenomenal books. And coffee. Gabrielle Creevy as Maggie. I could not have dreamed of meeting a person like Maggie Wilken, who continues to show me every single day what true bravery looks like. And I similarly could not have imagined an actor as generous and keen and skilled as Gabi to bring Maggie’s story to the screen with the precision and tenderness that was required. Good people with good people. There is nothing more right.
These two phenomenal actors not only brought Sloane and Richard’s story to vibrant gorgeous life, they also imbued it with the sort of messy yet precise nuance that marks all couplings. They were bold and wise and generous and fearless and took on scenes that may shock some. But that was our goal with the show as with the book: to tell tales of female desire from each individual woman’s perspective, even and especially when it is considered by some “unruly.” @dewandawise and @blairunderwood_official I will never stop thanking you both and now I can’t wait for the world to see what you’ve done. Hard days always feel more manageable with excellent literature. Clover Stroud’s latest is as good as one might expect. But I have just been blown away by Hanako Footman’s debut, Mongrel, which has some of the finest sentences I’ve read in ages, and a purity and beauty of emotion that comes along just as rarely. Both available to preorder 🪽
This book is something else. It was recommended to me by Dani Shapiro who only recommends the very best and so I got it immediately and I rarely do porch reading or anything that resembles sunny self care and yet I can’t help myself this time. floored by the deep emotions, the haunt of a certain kind of mother, or really any mother at all, rendered so quietly and yet vividly. And the writing is pure elegance.
My novel is the twin that’s taking up all the space and oxygen; on the same day it’ll be published, however, (September 12th) another book will appear that I love just as ferociously. This year’s O. Henry Prize Stories anthology is full of the most extraordinary and brilliant voices—my job was just putting them all together. What joy it was, and what an unbelievable honor. I love this book so much. I love every writer in it (if I didn’t tag everyone, it’s because I’m a Luddite). I love @jennymquigley for allowing me to accompany her in this gorgeous pursuit. If you teach or enjoy stories, let me tell you, this book is a whammy. Every story is golden.
And, because Jenny let me dedicate this book, I dedicated it to my faves, the ladies who kept me sane during the pandemic, and who are as wild about short stories as I am (excessively so): @lauramvandenberg and @lelliottholt
The paperback of GHOST LOVER is out in the US next Tuesday, June 13. Get one and bring it to a perfect beach or read it inside somewhere hot and sad, in the atmosphere most of them were written. 🫠
