Rolly Crump died yesterday at the age of 93, at his home in Carlsbad, CA. I don’t have to tell you his life story or how special he was to so many people or how he is one of the most iconic artists that lived in the 20th century. You already know this I’m sure. But what I can tell you is that the saying “don’t meet your heroes” doesn’t apply to everyone. The day Rolly and his Wife Marie invited me to their home in 2019 was a day I’ll always remember. He was the one of kindest and most intelligent humans I’ve ever met. I was insanely worried to meet Him. He is #1 of 4 of my influences in art. I’ve admired his work most of my life as soon as I learned who he was when I was young. In this photo we are saying cheers with a shot of Jack Daniels followed by a bite of apple pie in our other hand. An old tradition Rolly Crump did with other imagineers for Disney back in the 50’s/60’s. It was an honor sharing that moment with this great artist, this great man, this great inspiration to so many. Look at that detail!! I know @missmaelaroux hates working with my style, it’s ridiculously difficult to tattoo. But holy cow did they come out perfect!! No one rise could have pulled this off. A marathon weekend took place. Mickey was Saturday and Pete was Sunday. The pain was off the charts but it’s worth it. My sister @missmaelaroux spent all weekend working her butt off painstakingly digging my shins to make my new American traditional 1920s sailor “Battle Willie” tattoo style paintings a reality!
