Part 2 Why do I use salvaged material in my packaging?
The answer is not as simple as you think. It’s definitely sustainable, but that’s not the only reason!
🌱 It’s cheap - I get most of the materials for free, so I don’t have to pad the product pricing with the packaging cost.
🌱 Pushes me to be creative - The unpredictability of the kind of material I get makes me improvise on how I package items. I have packed both tiny and large items with salvaged packaging and almost every time I learn a new technique in wrapping, sticking, cutting
🌱 It gets the job done - this is what was mind blowing to me, my customers didn’t care that the packaging was ‘scrappy’ or put together. All they wanted was their product to arrive safe. Some customers even loved that it was repurposed material, which adds to the sustainability value a business has to offer.
Lastly, this practice hones my skills of viewing waste in a different perspective which I think is crucial when you run a small business curating / making secondhand goods.
My favourite items to use for packaging are : spectacle boxes, phone boxes, tic tac containers, jewelry boxes that you get when you purchase gold, old school book covers and appliance boxes.
