It’s not coincidental that we are seeing a rise in the popularity of yoga and other holistic therapeutic activities along side the rise in poor mental health. The increased popularity of yoga is a direct reflection of the current mental health epidemic, and a global reawakening to self-care practices and where they should sit on our list of priorities. But how does yoga benefit mental health? 1. Yoga helps to decrease stress hormones whilst increasing endorphins and GABA. In turn, increased GABA decreases anxiety and improves mood. 2. It also helps to improve cognition, memory, attention, learning and awareness through increased oxygen and blood flow to the brain as well as directing focus. 3. The breathwork and meditation parts of yoga help to calm and centre the mind, allowing for time to connect with self, and slow down. Creating designated time to be present lowers stress levels and allows for greater mental capacity to deal with future stressors. In the coming weeks, I will be releasing a series of ‘Mental Health + Yoga’ posts to help support good mental health and wellness. The plan is to combine my 8 years of psychology, mental health and therapy training / work experience with my love of yoga to create a holistic approach to improving mental wellness. Stay tuned!

Hello hello! I’m Megan, I’ve just got back to Bristol after a year long adventure travelling and teaching yoga all over the world. Now I’m back, I’m looking for work. Are you (or someone you know) looking for an incredibly organised, calm and collected, trauma-informed yoga teacher with lots of experience holding / managing / organising events and workshops?
