Still in disbelief over winning a best bluegrass album GRAMMY for City of Gold 🤯 when they called our name I was completely taken by surprise. The bluegrass category was full of INCREDIBLE albums by @billystrings@willienelsonofficial@michaelclevelandfiddle@sambushband and @mightypoplar so to be honest I really hadn’t considered that we might actually win the award and when I got to the podium I was at a complete loss for words. Music has always been my City of Gold, what I’ve chased after and dreamed of. I’m so grateful for everyone who has been part of this musical world. I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone more fully for the work that was put into this project- @jerrydouglas I’m so proud of the music we’ve created together on two Grammy winning albums. Thank you for pushing us to be a better band, offering so much wisdom and love, and always having our back. @ketchsecor thank you for being the best partner and for pouring so much care and heart into writing every song on City of Gold with me. Thank you to my amazing bandmates in Golden Highway @bronwynkeithhynes@shelbass@domles and @kyletuttlebanjo - you all inspire me endlessly. I’m so proud of all we have accomplished together and how much we’ve grown. When I was a kid I took a field trip to Caloma, CA to learn about the gold rush. I’ll never forget the dusty hills and the grizzled old miner who showed us the golden nugget around his neck. Just like gold fever, music has always captivated me, captured my heart, and driven me to great lengths to explore its depths. On my new album I dug deep as a songwriter (with Ketch Secor, Shelby Means, Melody Walker and Mason Via) and co-producer (with Jerry Douglas) and surfaced with a record that celebrates the music of my heart, my life, the land where I grew up, and the stories I heard along the way. I made this record with my band Golden Highway - Shelby Lee Means, Kyle Tuttle, Dominick Leslie, and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes after playing over 100 shows across the country last year. We were joined by the one and only Dave Matthews who lent his unbelievably beautiful vocals to track 4, Jordan Perlman who added tasty percussion to track 5, and our fearless leader Jerry Douglas who added his masterful playing to tracks 6, 8 and 11. The songs span from breakdowns to ballads, fairytales and fiddle tunes, from Yosemite up to the Gold Country and out beyond the mountains. That visit to Coloma, site of California’s first gold strike, is where I first heard about El Dorado, the city of gold. Playing music can take you to a place that is just as precious 💛
