Here’s how to teach orbit, a flashy trick to add to any freestyle routine!
Step 1: Cue your dog to put their front paws on top of an upside down bowl. Lure them with a treat to move around the bowl. For some dogs, this step is easier if the handler stands next to them and walks into them as they turn. Pivoting around a bowl builds rear-end awareness and strength in the back legs, making it easier to teach tricks like orbit.
Step 2: Fade out the lure and build independence with pivoting. This will make the next steps go more smoothly as you’ll have a rock solid foundation, creating fast and fluid orbits.
Step 3: This is where it starts to look like the end result. Using your dog’s favorite treat, lure them backwards around your legs. It’s easiest to do this with two hands, a treat in each hand.
Step 4: Finally, phase out all lures. This could take a few sessions or a few months depending on the dog. Make sure to go at your own dog’s pace with this. Once you’ve got it, add a cue word or hand signal and have fun with the trick!
Note: You can teach orbit both ways! Just do all the steps in the opposite direction. Some dogs prefer going one way over another though, so make sure to teach their favored side first!
