The Natural Bridge after illumination.
Two rangers walked with me after the illumination show on Saturday after asking them if I could continue my night photo effort. One let me borrow their flashlight to try and do some painting since my manual running around with a flash was not cutting it.
During the intervals in between shining the light we all got to stand in complete darkness seeing the fireflies glow during prime mating season and hearing all the critters. One ranger said “the looming darkness of the bridge” which was a pretty accurate description of what the giant rock looked like post illumination. It was similar to say, how a cave feels in complete darkness. But surrounded by nature on a wonderful summer night with bright stars shining through the hole in the bridge, it made it feel a little less doom and gloom and more hopeful. That there are still places that humans have not completely taken over…
I didn’t want to keep them waiting so this was the closest I got to my goal but I really love that you can still see the night sky just above the bridge creeping through! (Natural Bridge State Park is a certified dark sky park) @naturalbridge@friendsofnaturalbridge

5 must see places in the Red River Gorge.
Locations featured below⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Kentucky has so many things to offer aside from all the hiking we did, the views are accessible and beautiful from a top the mountains and several arches to deep underground in caves and mines.
📍The gorge underground kayak tours. They have several tour options and it’s a great way to stay cool in the Kentucky heat.
📍Mammoth Cave National Park- we did the domes and DRIPSTONES tour but they have several options for tours even a self guided option. Another great way to cool down in the Kentucky heat.
📍Nada Tunnel-a one way tunnel with a tight fit
📍Natural Bridge- we hiked the 2.5 miles which was worth the sunrise from the top of the bridge. There is a sky lift option that will take you right to the top but it opens at 9 am. If you want the bridge to yourself to enjoy a beautiful start to your day, go early and hike to it.
📍 sunset from Chimney Top Trail- the hike to this overlook is short and paved, 0.7 miles round trip. Def worth the little walk to see the sunset over the gorge.
