Released #onthisday in 1953: STALAG 17. Billy Wilder brings his signature wit and dark humor to this WWII comedic thriller, which follows a barracks of American POWs who suspect a spy in their midst. In order to elicit the best performances, Wilder chose to shoot the film in sequence and withhold the last few script pages from the cast to keep them guessing who the rat might be. The film netted Wilder's SUNSET BOULEVARD collaborator William Holden the Best Actor Oscar, who gave one of the shortest acceptance speeches in Oscar history. #NBRtop10 #BillyWilder #WilliamHolden

In honor of #HelenKellerDay , we're revisiting THE MIRACLE WORKER, Arthur Penn's 1962 film adaptation of the hit Broadway play. Penn had directed the play as well, and pushed United Artists to allow the casting of its original actors, Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft. The film made the #NBRtop10 , and netted Bancroft the NBR Best Actress award for her portrayal of Anne Sullivan, Keller's tutor and lifelong companion.
