“30 years since “The Big One” struck LA. Though technically epicentered in Reseda, The 1994 Northridge Earthquake profoundly affected this Valley native who still remembers the moments vividly.
As a young adult living in a feebly structured “dingbat” apartment, I began finding and buying associated ’94 ephemera, reading about Los Angeles being “overdue,”
wondering what was to come if the ground shook everything loose again.
What truly fascinated me on the years long journey was how many unique designs there (assumedly still) are out there from this internet nascent, pre-print-on-demand market. Who made them? Where were they sold?

Sunbather is a ‘beyond high contrast’ typeface originally designed for the genre defying / career defining 2013 @deafheavenband album.
Referencing early 20th century experiments by Swiss typographer Jan Tschichold, Sunbather challenges your eye to infer what isn’t there. Sinewy curves meet sharp serifs to entrance the viewer’s gaze.
The regular weight stays true to the original font, while an added lowercase, diacritics, and stylistic alternates allow you to change terminal shapes or add in serifs that were purposefully omitted in the original.
Two new masters were drawn and interpolated from, a delicate ‘thin’ and a newly redrawn sturdy ‘black’ comprising a range of seven weights.
Thank you to @morningtype and @manictype for their production and engineering helping pull this project together into a usable form for the masses.

New work - Creative direction for @dashboardconfessional
Album campaign and concert film for @momenthouse shot at [ insert world class botanical garden right here in Southern California ] in the middle of January. Weeks spent scouting exactly where the aloes and camellias would be going off, planning locations and figuring out the unique challenges of recording such an intimate sound outdoors.
The floral through line of the campaign kicked off with a photograph Chris gravitated towards and grew and flourished from there into packaging, touring, merchandise and more.
