Posted @withregram@cineredis Join the Women’s Film Preservation Fund (@nywiftwfpf ) at #CineRedis24 Fri 26 July 11:00 for shorts by Award-winning independent filmmaker and photographer Liane Brandon, one of the first US indie filmmakers to emerge from the second Wave Feminist Film Women’s Movement. The film screening will be introduced by Liane Brandon (pre-recorded) and include: Anything You Want To Be (1971, 8 mins) A teenager’s humorous collision with gender role stereotypes and one of the first independent films of the early women’s movement to explore the external pressures and the more subtle internal pressures a girl faces in finding her identity. Sometimes I Wonder Who I Am (1972, 5 mins) This poignant brief portrait of a young mother grew out of the experiences of a group of women who found – as they haltingly expressed to one another their feelings of emptiness, anger, and fear – that they were not alone. Betty Tells Her Story (1972, 20 mins) In two continuous takes, a woman sitting in a chair tells a story about the purchase of a dress — twice and the contrast between the two stories reveals her deeper feeling about herself and her place in the world. The screening is followed by an in-person discussion with Kirsten Larvick (Co-Chair of the Women’s Film Preservation Fund and a Moving Image Preservationist) and Bristol filmmaker Katie Davies (part of @beefbristol film and sound collective) hosted by critic and writer @tarajudah All ticket holders are invited to participate in a FREE Get Together after the event, an opportunity to connect with each other and record your stories and responses to Liane Brandon’s films. 🎬🎥 . . Women’s Film Preservation Fund do amazing work… For example, they were involved in the preservation of Stephanie Rothman’s The Student Nurses (1970) with Cinema Conservancy which has made it possible for @themuseumofmodernart to provide us with a #35mm print also screening at #CineRedis24 on Thu 25 July 20:30. . #womensupportingwomen #womensfilm #womeninfilm #femalefilmmakers #filmpreservation #feminism #feministfilm #lianebrandon #photographer #stephanierothman #rogercorman #thestudentnurses

In our 90 minute interactive NYWIFT seminar on July 16, Marilyn Horowitz will share how to apply the Word of the Day tools to your current project and create an efficient journaling practice to supercharge your writing. The Word of the Day Practice is a 15-minute journaling process that quickly shuts down the inner critic that plagues us writers. Using words and images, the practice eliminates the bad habits of guilt and self-criticism. Instead, we can focus on unconditional creativity and greater productivity. Bring a pen and paper, and roll up your sleeves! Open exclusively to NYWIFT members! Register now at the 🔗 in our bio!

Posted @withregram@yvimosluz Two talented, admired women filmmakers in this picture. Two stories behind. I was an AD for features in Venezuela, but I had an insatiable appetite to watch films that weren’t accessible there. So, I became a film specialist downloader—a hacker, if you will—and started ripping documentaries from the internet because that was the only way to watch those films. One of the first films I downloaded was Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman, a seven-part series by Jennifer Fox @realjenniferfox . It changed my life. I watched it in two days. I had never seen such an approach in filmmaking; the camera was free, it was flying. I felt like I was with Jennifer on that intimate journey. The concept of “passing the camera” with your participants stuck with me. That documentary set my path in the documentary work that I do. Fast forward 15 years, I had the opportunity to share this story with Jennifer. It was a heartwarming moment. Wow! Thanks, universe. And then, minutes later at the NYWIFT @nywift event we were attending, I saw her talking with one of the best producers in town, the powerhouse, Beth Levison @beth_lev . Of course, I snapped this shot. With Beth, I had the pleasure of collaborating on The Martha Mitchell Effect @themarthafilm , I was the Online Editor and Post-Production Supervisor, and Beth was one of the Producers. It was a dream team: Anne Alvergue, director/editor @annequin , Debra McClutchy, co-director @debs_mc_clutch , Judith Mizrachy, Producer @jjmizrachy , Toby. Shimin, consulting editor @tobyshimin We were rushing to deliver to Sundance, and I still remember, we doing the color grading on New Year’s Eve with Stewart Griffin at Final Frame @finalframe_post . It paid off; we ended up with a nomination for an Academy Award, and I gained new friends! I love my job!

Today we’re catching with another @urbanworldff alum @ladyzjah - who was also the recipient of @nywift best narrative short at #UW23 for the stunning @reunionshortmovie ! Tell us about your inspirations? I’ve always been a fan of classic hollywood movies. Singing In The Rain, Imitation Of Life, A Star is Born. The fact that I didn’t see myself represented in them physically even though I identified with the very real human emotions and life journeys depicted in the films was my biggest motivation to become a storyteller, first as a performer, then as a writer and filmmaker. What was the pre-production experience like? The pre-production process was like going to film school for me as I had no experience in making films other than being in front of the camera as an actress. I was inspired to write and make this film largely because I am, like the vast majority of the USA, an immigrant and stories of our experience as immigrants spring daily from a seemingly bottomless well. The impetus for writing Reunion was put in motion by an article I read in The New York Times of refugees and asylum seekers of Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war residing at a facility on Staten Island and discovering they were sharing space with the violators and criminals who’d destroyed their families. It begged so many  questions: what would I do in such a situation? How many people living, right now in NYC have similar stories? Who and what are we running from or to? Inspirations for Reunion? There are many films that directly and in-directly inspired our film Reunion but the first that comes to mind is Marathon Man, by John Schlesinger. Favorite memory at Urbanworld? One of my favourite Urbanworld memories  would be the breakfasts and getting to meet and know the other filmmakers. Favorite at Urbanworld? My favorite film at the festival was American Fiction. Forthcoming projects? Developing a feature based on our Brooklyn block about neighbors coming together to clean up their community. A children’s story based on a Sierra Leonean folk-tale about a mythical and greatly feared night creature. #filmmaker #femalefilmmaker #filmfestival #actor #awardwinning #nyc
