@yvimosluz Two talented, admired women filmmakers in this picture. Two stories behind.
I was an AD for features in Venezuela, but I had an insatiable appetite to watch films that weren’t accessible there. So, I became a film specialist downloader—a hacker, if you will—and started ripping documentaries from the internet because that was the only way to watch those films. One of the first films I downloaded was Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman, a seven-part series by Jennifer Fox
@realjenniferfox . It changed my life. I watched it in two days. I had never seen such an approach in filmmaking; the camera was free, it was flying. I felt like I was with Jennifer on that intimate journey. The concept of “passing the camera” with your participants stuck with me. That documentary set my path in the documentary work that I do.
Fast forward 15 years, I had the opportunity to share this story with Jennifer. It was a heartwarming moment. Wow! Thanks, universe. And then, minutes later at the NYWIFT
@nywift event we were attending, I saw her talking with one of the best producers in town, the powerhouse, Beth Levison
@beth_lev . Of course, I snapped this shot. With Beth, I had the pleasure of collaborating on The Martha Mitchell Effect
@themarthafilm , I was the Online Editor and Post-Production Supervisor, and Beth was one of the Producers. It was a dream team: Anne Alvergue, director/editor
@annequin , Debra McClutchy, co-director
@debs_mc_clutch , Judith Mizrachy, Producer
@jjmizrachy , Toby. Shimin, consulting editor
@tobyshimin We were rushing to deliver to Sundance, and I still remember, we doing the color grading on New Year’s Eve with Stewart Griffin at Final Frame
@finalframe_post . It paid off; we ended up with a nomination for an Academy Award, and I gained new friends!
I love my job!
