Perron Institute and @parkinsonswa have established a monthly clinic to support newly diagnosed people with PD during the difficult first few weeks after diagnosis. The main objective is to provide information and guidance early in the PD journey to enable the best possible pathway to coping with the diagnosis and optimising the use of available resources. The clinic will be led by senior PD nurse specialists Alexa Jefferson and Sheree Ambrosini and Dr David Blacker (neurologist living with PD). Other team members include a physiotherapist specialising in PD, and people living with PD. A GP or specialist referral is required - Perron Institute Clinic reception will confirm receipt of referral and contact the patient with the details of the clinic session. A Medicare card is required, no fee is payable. Perron Institute and @universitywa researchers have discovered a new set of cells that can protect blood vessel structure in the central nervous system known as the blood-brain barrier, published in the journal @scienceadvanceshead on Friday. Professor Minghao Zheng, head of Brain and Bone Axis Research at Perron Institute|UWA was one of the senior first authors and said: “Our findings give new insights into the cellular framework that underpins the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier that occurs in ageing and disease, and provide a target for the development of treatment regimes.” Read more at Latest News link in Bio.

We are pleased to welcome Sonya Phillips who recently joined the Perron Institute clinic as receptionist and administrator. Sonya says that she likes helping people and making connections, which are fantastic attributes in our busy clinic. Today is #WorldMusicDay , which is fitting as Sonya worked previously as a high school music teacher and concert band leader, before volunteering at the children's hospital and most recently worked as a medical receptionist in a GP clinic. Professor Minghao Zheng, Professor of Orthopaedic Research at The University of Western Australia and Head of Bone and Brain Axis Research at Perron Institute contributed to a recent international study opening the possibility of a molecular therapeutic approach for bone diseases associated with vascular damage published in the scientific journal Nature Communications. Prof Zheng said “We have discovered a crucial role of osteocytes (bone cells) in the regulation of vascularization (blood vessel development) in bone tissue." "The results of this study are exciting because they provide new insights into the vascular system and its cellular interactions within bone and bone marrow. They inspire the potential application of mitochondrial therapy for bone-related diseases.” Read more at Latest News Link in Bio.

Last week, @kings_college_london ’s MND Care and Research Centre proudly welcomed a distinguished delegation from the Perron Institute and the WA Government, including Steve Arnott, CEO of Perron Institute, and John Langoulant AO, Agent General for Western Australia. This visit marked a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between King’s College London, King’s College Hospital, and the Perron Institute. The delegation from King’s MND Care and Research Centre comprised Professor Ammar Al Chalabi, Dr Ahmad Al Khleifat, and Dr Alfredo Iacoangeli. They were joined by representatives from the Perron Institute and the WA Government: Steve Arnott, John Langoulant, Tom Lamond, Julian Arbuckle, and Dr Frances (Frankie) Theunissen. A notable aspect of the visit was the emphasis on the strategic partnership between King’s College London and the Perron Institute. The presence of John Langoulant, whose office plays a crucial role in fostering relationships between organisations in the UK and WA, underscored the importance of this collaboration.
