PFS Studio is featured in the Spring 2024 issue of Landscapes | Paysages Magazine. This issue, ‘Generations’, is dedicated to the many transitions the landscape architecture profession has seen over the last 20-30 years in BC. 📸: @tomarbanphotography #PFSStudio #landscapearchitecture #CSLA #landscapespaysages PFS Studio has been in practice for over 35 years. Over these decades, we have held on to a relatively consistent set of values and ambitions within the constantly changing world within which we practice. Our work has emphasized the importance of the public realm in defining and shaping our cities, communities, and environments. And we have consistently pursued work that has come with complex challenges, but with potential for meaningful change. In this latest article, PFS Studio discusses our practice in terms of responsiveness to the changing world, our consistent focus on context and placekeeping, and our reliance on our team’s diversity and the high level of Principal engagement. PFS Studio's Redmond Downtown Park is the recipient of a 2024 Award of Excellence by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects in the Small-Scale Public Landscapes category! Led by PFS Studio Principal Kelty McKinnon, Redmond Downtown Park transforms a former auto-parts strip mall into a vibrant, tech-savvy urban park that serves as the new civic heart of Redmond, Washington. The design integrates digital art and nature, and is inspired by the buoyant, hummocky peat-bog history of the site, as well as Redmond’s present and future as the tech capital of the Pacific Northwest. The park was crafted through extensive engagement with community members, event organizers, and Digipen faculty to host a variety of digital and analog events year-round. It features a 550’ diameter circular lawn; underlit wood boardwalk; multipurpose wet/dry plaza with sculptural pavilion, stage, and water wall; picnicking bosque; gardens; and diverse seating opportunities among over 100 new trees. The sculptural pavilion and waterwall, titled ‘Buoyant’, is designed by artist Jill Anholt as a platform for digital art and light projection, as well as a multitude of cultural events held throughout the year. Thank you to the @csla_aapc for your recognition of our work on this project. 📸: Catherine Tighe, Brett Ryan, Salinas Holcomb #RedmondDowntownPark #PFSStudio #parkdesign #publicrealm #publicart #leadership #designexcellence #CSLA

Alberni by Kuma is Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s first tall building in North America, developed by @westbankcorp At the concave atrium at the base of the building is a tranquil Japanese moss garden. The garden features a gathering space with terraced amphitheatre and piano performance space, with an intricate wooden lattice - designed by Kuma - adorning the space from above. The garden is accessible from the street through a filigree of leafy bamboo and a curved, subtly illuminated stone pathway. 📸: Ema Peter #PFSStudio #landscapearchitecture #kengokuma #japanesemossgarden

Lansdowne Park, designed by PFS Studio, set out to transform the long-neglected site of the former Central Canada Exhibition into a new waterfront park and civic heart in Ottawa, Ontario. The park features a Great Lawn, an urban square for the Ottawa Farmers' Market, a series of grand allees and plazas, new topography and intimate greens, civic gardens and orchards, a children’s play zone and water plaza, and two significant public art works by public artist Jill Anholt. The Aberdeen Pavilion remains the great 'tent' at the centre of the park for indoor programming, and adaptive reuse of the Horticulture Building includes a teaching kitchen and community hall. Algonquin interpretive elements including interlocking stone pavers patterned after Algonquin basketry; feature planting of Seven Trees of Significance; an Ethno-Botanical Garden; and Teaching Circle celebrate Indigenous history, culture, and arts. In a winter city like Ottawa, it was imperative to design all spaces in the park as flexible venues for a year-round programme of special events. During the colder months, the park is activated through a myriad of winter activities and events. 📸: Johany Jutras, Brett Ryan, James Peltzer #PFSStudio #landscapearchitecture #Ottawa #Lansdowne Park

True North Square is a mixed-use complex in downtown Winnipeg and adjacent to the MTS Centre. The main component of the public realm is a public plaza at the heart of the development that is a vibrant space with multiple layers of activity. The plaza is designed as an open and inviting space to be used on a day to day basis with sculptural seating elements and an interactive water feature. Also incorporated into the design of the plaza is the supporting infrastructure to transform the space into a multipurpose event venue. A raised intersection provides an at-grade connection to the MTS Centre and creates a larger urban public realm that can be programmed for special civic and entertainment events. True North Square stays activated all year round! Swipe for how the plaza is used during Winter Wanderland. 📸: @winnipegfreepress #PFSStudio #landscapearchitecture #wintercities #Winnipeg #TrueNorthSquare

The ICE Plaza in Edmonton's ICE District is a vibrant space with year-round activities which celebrate Edmonton as a winter city, including ice skating, pre and post-game celebrations, outdoor concerts and festivals. Iconic sculptural elements within the plaza serve as warming stations, digital media elements and lighting elements which create a backdrop to the activity in the plaza. Consistent design features are employed in the plaza, around the arena, and within a festive promenade linking the plaza with City Hall. This promenade also expresses the history of the Edmonton Oilers through design elements. #PFSStudio #landscapearchitecture #wintercities #Edmonton #edmontonICEdistrict #ICEplaza
