Let’s talk about traditions and why we believe they are so important for making your wedding special and unique🥰. Four years ago, when I went to Slovakia for the first time, I had the opportunity to attend my sister-in-law’s wedding. At midnight, they performed a very ancient ritual to commemorate how weddings were celebrated in the traditional folk Slovak way. The ritual symbolizes a young woman from the village, adorned with a crown full of flowers, symbolizing her purity. A man, her future husband, would then come to claim her in marriage. All the women from the village would gather, singing beautiful traditional songs, and accompany her as they prepared her to become a wife. They danced and sang beautiful folk songs, removing the crown of flowers and replacing it with a bandanna, symbolizing her new status as a married woman. They would then call the husband forward and ask him to take care of her. After that, they shared a kiss and were lifted up on a chair to dance the polka.
When I witnessed this tradition, I was filled with excitement and immediately knew that I wanted it to be part of my own wedding someday. Since it is almost a lost tradition, we had to make special arrangements. We brought a group of women from a faraway village who still had the original outfits preserved for more than 150 years. Additionally, my Peter and I rented the original clothes to make the celebration as traditional as possible. We also had a fuyara player, adding to the authentic atmosphere. The moment was incredibly sublime, and I couldn’t contain my emotions. I was overwhelmed with joy and couldn’t stop crying. All our guest gather una circle around us….Surprisingly, everyone else in attendance was also moved to tears, even though they may not have understood the words being sung (me neither 😂). They were able to experience the heartfelt emotions that the tradition evoked. For me, it was a tremendous honor to celebrate this tradition and it truly made the occasion unforgettable.
