Few shows in the modern era of television have caused as much conversation within the gay community as HBO’s Looking. Framed as a response to straight and female-centric series that follow a group of young friends going through life, love, and everything in between, the series created by Michael Lannan and produced by Andrew Haigh caught our eyes as one of the few shows to be for us, about us, and by us. But what did that mean exactly? For many, Looking seemed to be fighting a losing battle, carrying the weight of an entire community longing to see themselves on screen, and unable to accurately represent a universal gay experience (something it never aimed to do). This year marks a full decade since we first started following the misadventures of Patrick (Jonathan Groff), Frankie (Frankie J. Alvarez), Dom (Murray Bartlett), and Doris (Lauren Weedman) in San Francisco. As gay representation has dramatically expanded over that period of time, maybe we can look back at the show with kinder eyes, and see what the creators always wanted: Just a group of friends trying to get by, as we all are. #ReeferMadness satirizes the 1930s war on marijuana, but the country’s coming full circle with more states legalizing cannabis. If I were to open my own shop … I would call it the Cheetah Den. It would be a wild safari themed animal print extravaganza of a of a head shop and a place to hang out. I love a desert decor. I have a place out in Joshua Tree, so it’d be a mix of Southwest and cowboy chic meets safari. Very comfy velour, animal prints, and leather chairs. I wear animal prints almost every day — it’s very soothing and sexy. If you see Reefer Madness, I’ve hidden little animal prints throughout the whole show. 40 years after its initial release, the Beverly Hills Cop franchise is back with Eddie Murphy reprising the titular role for the new Netflix sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The 1984 original made Murphy an international star, earned more than $230 million at the box office, and was the highest-grossing film in the U.S. that year. It also introduced the world to Bronson Pinchot’s now-classic character Serge, a flamboyant art gallery assistant with a foreign accent that has trouble pronouncing Murphy’s character’s name. The Tony Awards… Pride… What a time to be a showmosexual! Every gay who was any gay in New York made their annual pilgrimage to The Hammerstein Ballroom for two sold-out performances of the annual strip-for-charity event Broadway Bares, benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. This year’s Vegas-themed show continued in the event’s longstanding tradition of showcasing sass, class, and ass with a cast of over 200 of Broadway’s hottest bodies baring it all with special appearances by a host of Broadway stars and celebs, including Alan Cumming and Laverne Cox.
