On our way back home to #Alaska after a great training exercise with our PJs here in #canada🇨🇦 . Good times were had, and it was great getting to work with our Canadian partners, awesome. C-130s lead the way, I'm so glad to have experienced it!! Our C-130 needed some extra attention, so I had to make a "short" roadtrip to #Duluth #Minnesota to pick up a maintenance specialist at the Duluth airport, then drive back to Canada to fix the plane. While I was in Duluth, I decided to go to @umnduluth and attend Mass with @bulldogcatholic & celebrate with @fathermikeschmitz . One early Saturday morning, I'm at the BX at Warren Air Force Base, and I run into this guy at the weapons sales spot, and he's wearing USC sweatpants. I say #FightOn . We start chatting, and I find out he's a @usarmy Infantry Officer, and I tell him that I'm prior Army combat arms, too. He tells me his name us Lucas Yoder and that he played volleyball at USC. He also told me that his dad, David Yoder, also played volleyball at USC back in the day and that he was coached by his older brother Bob, Lucas's uncle. Apparently, Lucas came from a long lineage of USC athletics and volleyball!! After 12 years, I had to pay Eric a visit and finally say goodbye. Eric was my bestie when we both worked at @united in the mid 90s. We'd talk on the phone for hours, hang out all over the world, and laughed the whole time. After 09/11, I went to grad school and Eric went back to active duty in the @usarmy . We were in our 20s when we met, he became one of my first "3AM friends". I joined the military after I finished grad school, and I reached out to him a couple of times after, but then we lost touch. I didn't take the news well when I found out, and I can't believe I waited so long to pay my final respects. I did it! I finished The Bible In A Year and The Catechism In A Year, both hosted by @fathermikeschmitz . What a journey it's been, and as a reflect on my journey in 2023, it has had a much greater impact than I can imagine. It reminded me of my journey back when I was a college kid at @uscedu and I left the Church to become a born-again Evangelical Protestant. However, middle of my junior year at USC, I found #OpusDei in #LosAngeles and went to #WorldYouthDay1993 in #Denver . Back in CA, I attended the Catholic Family conference in #LongBeach , and I heard talks by both Scott & Kimberly Hahn. I remember Scott, "when you're in a group of #Christians you tell who the Catholics are, they're the ones not carrying Bibles!" 🤣🤣 Kimberly ended her talk with, "Catholics, we need to memorize Scripture. There's nothing in the DNA of #Protestants that makes it easier for them." 🤣🤣 #catholicfaith #bibleinayearpodcast #catechismofthecatholicchurch #catechisminayear2023
