Our #Edinburgh studio marked an important milestone this week with plans approved for Summix’s Central Quay scheme in #Glasgow . Once completed Central Quay will feature more than 400 private apartments, over 900 student apartments alongside commercial spaces set within a landscape of new public spaces and private residential courtyards. Inspired by the drumlins (hilly glacial deposits) on which Glasgow was built, we have designed a multi-functional landscape that re-introduces nature back into the city. The playful amenity spaces, trees, sunken rain gardens, grassy mounds and wildflower meadows laid onto the masterplans urban grid will add much needed green space to this area west of the M8 and Expressway. We’ve also been appointed to take forward the next phase of Maybury Quarter - another Summix scheme - which will see the regeneration of the 15.5 acres former Saica pack facility in West #Edinburgh . Initial proposals for this flagship low carbon neighbourhood aim to deliver a mix of uses including housing, hotel, commercial and retail alongside new public realm. #landscapearchitecture #landscapearchitect #publicrealm #glasgow #glasgownewhomes #glasgowregeneration #edinburgh #glasgowplanningnews #edinburghplanningnews #edinburghregeneration #urbangreening

Landscape works at Millers Quay - part of @wirralwaters in #Merseryside - are due to start in the next few weeks. The £90m development is really taking shape - as captured in these stills from a new film created by @stratus_imagery , plus a recent site visit by our team. We have worked on the project alongside @howells_makes since 2017 developing the landscape strategy and detailed design for the new residential neighbourhood of one and two-bedroom apartments and affordable homes. The scheme will see hundreds of new trees; integrated SuDs systems including rain gardens; native grasses and shrubs and hedgerows planted to support an enriched biodiversity and habitat creation across the site whilst supporting the existing bird life, notably nesting terns and cormorants, present at the docks. Swipe left ⬅ to see CGIs of how the external works, which are due to be completed by the end of the year, will look. #landscapearchitecture #newhomes #northwesthomes #landscapearchitect #wirralwaters #wirral #landscapearchitect #publicrealm #northwestregeneration

Our delivery role on @manmetuni_ !!re!!_039;s latest building is nearing completion as the hoardings are being removed. The new Faculty of Science & Engineering, approved by @manchestercitycouncil in March 2020, is designed to provide better facilities for students including new research and laboratory space. The landscape, as detailed by re-form, will create a fantastic setting for the building, providing new areas of diverse planting, open lawns and a broad variety of tree species offering a significant improvement to the biodiversity of the site. Nestled between the hustle and bustle of Oxford Rd and the Mancunian way, the landscape will offer a calm, green setting for students staff and visitors to enjoy. #publicrealm #landscapearchitecture #manchester #landscapearchitecturelife

Our employee spotlight turns to the newest recruit in our #Manchester studio, Senior Landscape Architect, James Stephenson… “I grew up in Derby and studied Industrial Design at @universityofleeds . My career then took me to Australia, where I worked as an industrial designer. While exploring the bushlands and national parks around Sydney and beyond, I fell in love with nature. This newfound passion led me back to the UK to pursue a Masters in Landscape Architecture at @themsarch . Transitioning to landscape architecture has allowed me to combine my design expertise with my love for the natural world. One of my favourite projects I’ve worked on to date involved transforming a dual carriageway in Stretford, #Manchester into a lush linear park with plants, trees, cycle lanes, and nature-based play equipment. Another memorable project near #Wakefield was based around enhancing biodiversity through the creation of varied habitats including attenuation ponds, planting of meadows, woodlands, and footpaths surrounding large, commercial warehouses. I’m excited to be part of the team; re-form’s approach starts with meaningful site visits to understand the history and DNA of a place, as well as develop a thorough understanding of each project’s context and future use. Currently, I’m working on several projects, including revamping public realm in association with new residential buildings next to Old Trafford football stadium in Manchester; designing residential landscapes and rooftop gardens on Greenwich Peninsula, #London ; masterplanning a significant development for Manchester’s Northern Gateway and creating a smaller scale residential scheme centred around including the community in the landscape in #Salford . I find the detailed coordination needed to bring designs to life post-planning particularly fascinating. Being on-site during construction, solving challenges as they arise, is something I really enjoy. I’m excited to collaborate and share knowledge and expertise with our talented team here in #Manchester and across our studios in #Leeds and #Edinburgh , and contribute to creating beautiful, functional environments for the public to enjoy”.

It’s not often you get the opportunity to transform a significant area of a city, but the #CornhillQuarter in #Lincoln has done just that. Working alongside @lincscoop , re-form has created a series of new public spaces linking from the station through to the River Witham. Framed around the city’s public realm strategy, which re-form delivered in 2018, the scheme features a series of civic spaces that encourage social interaction, support the city’s commercial offer and the improve its connectivity. Lincoln has a distinctive identity with strong heritage assets and striking architecture. Our approach to the public realm is very much respectful of this, using its architectural DNA as a framing device to celebrate this place. Establishing a palette of materials that is timeless and enduring was a key part of the design process. Natural stone surfacing, bespoke seating and tailored lighting installations create a high-quality setting for the Grade II listed Exchange Arcade and Corn Exchange buildings. The Cornhill Quarter public realm works completed in 2021. We continue to work in the city, most recently with the Sincil Bank community, alongside @lincolncouncil , where we are reimagining a series of new gateway spaces. #DNAofPlace #Publicrealm #Publicspaces #landscapearchitecture #landscapearchitect #Lincolnregeneration

Chocolate Works in #York – on the site of the old Terry’s Chocolate Factory – is now home to a specialist Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Rehabilitation Hospital and we designed a new accessible, sensory garden which will be used by residents. We worked with our client @hbdplaces , alongside @brain.kind , to understand the specific needs of the service users, discovering that people with brain injuries can often have serious mental, as well as physical, health issues. We used this information to design external landscape spaces including a private garden which nurtures a calm, serene environment. Looped paths through the garden help guide people through the space with strategically located feature planting as memory objects. We created dedicated areas for therapeutic exercise and activities surrounded by nature which will play a vital role in patient recovery. We used the DNA of this place – its history as the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory - to inform the sensory elements and our planting scheme is inspired by the smells and colours of chocolate and orange. #DNAofPlace #Landscapearchitecture #BrainInjuries #Theraputicgardens #Landscapearchitect #publicrealm #York #ChocolateWorksYork

The first illustrations have been revealed at @ukreiif today for the @bradfordcityvillage masterplan which aims to deliver 1,000 homes, as well as independent retail and leisure opportunities, business spaces and a high-quality public realm including three new community parks. We are part of the masterplanning team which has been working to define the placemaking strategy which focuses on: - Understanding the rich built and cultural heritage of Bradford to help shape a place for people to live in the city centre. - Designing enjoyable active travel journeys through the City Village, connecting to the wider centre, @universityofbradford , Bradford Forster Square station and communities to the north. - Building on the fantastic work that Bradford Council has recently completed to establish a network of green infrastructure. We look forward to working with the project team to continue to develop plans ahead of a planning application being submitted in spring 2025. 📷 credit @5plusarchitects and @dematerial_ #landscapearchitecture #landscapearchitect #Bradfordregeneration #Publicrealm #citycentreregeneration

Next in our series looking at designing for mental and physical disabilities and to mark #DementiaActionWeek - we put the spotlight on a new dementia garden design by our #Edinburgh studio for a veteran’s village in #Scotland… Tim Wilson: I’ve always had a keen interest in the link between access to nature, faster patient recovery times, improved mental health and well-being, and I’m lucky enough to have worked on some major healthcare schemes in my career. I was excited to use this experience and knowledge to design a new dementia garden, ‘Yarrow Garden’, for the residents of Erskine Veterans Village in #Bishopton , Scotland. We met with the residents and carers at Erskine Village to understand what they wanted from their outdoor space – which at present consists of a steeply sloping lawn (not ideal for their ageing residents, many of whom have mobility issues) with a few seats and fencing. We knew we needed to provide better access into the garden at the same time as creating a safe and secure space that is easy to navigate, as the residents with dementia can easily lose their sense of direction and become confused and distressed. In response we designed a series of accessible looped paths of varying lengths to accommodate differing levels of mobility so that residents could follow it round back to the start, with clear views to the main building. We extended the garden boundary to incorporate the existing trees and provide a woodland walk – whilst also creating space for ‘grow your own’ raised beds and herb gardens at wheelchair height. There is also a dedicated area for outdoor yoga or exercise classes. We designed a range of seating areas that are grouped by colour – for example, blue in one area, orange in another – to act as a visual location trigger for residents. Most importantly, as the facility is run by a charity which is raising the money to fund the new garden, we’ve conceived a ‘phased’ design so that work can start on key elements first, with further phases to be constructed as funding allows. #YarrowGarden is set to start on site beginning of June and to be complete by August / September.  @erskineveteranscharity   #Landscapearchitecture
