North Dakota, I am so proud to represent you on this Miss USA stage. Tonight, I wore my regalia to reflect the rich cultural history of the state of North Dakota. As Native people, we do NOT refer to our regalia as a costume. However, I knew this opportunity was too critical to not share this aspect of my culture. I humbly ask my relatives and elders in Native Country to grant me permission to share this dress. North Dakota has one of the highest populations of Native American people in the country, and it’s important to me to reflect that heritage. North Dakota is also the Peace Garden state, so I chose to wear floral designs that honors both the landmark and Ojibwe artwork motifs. From my hip hangs a “Kookum Scarf” as we call them in Native Country. These scarves originate from Scandinavian counties, and when those people immigrated to the United States in places like North Dakota, they brought these colorful scarves with them. I wear my sacred eagle feather plumes in my hair. North Dakota isn’t just where I live. It is the HOMELAND of my PEOPLE for time immemorial. It is an honor to represent what runs in my veins. And I dance the medicine dance, the jingle dress on the Miss USA stage. As always, I dance for the people. ✊🏽

Three years ago, I vowed to bring this crown home to the Turtle Mountains. Today, it finally happened! My name is SaNoah LaRocque, I am a citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, and I am Miss North Dakota USA 2022! I would not be the person I am— would not have the experiences or success I’ve had— were it not for my tribal identity. This crown is for the People. 🤎 During my reign, I intend to set an example for disadvantaged youth. There is no limit to what can be accomplished. THANK YOU to everyone who’s been apart of this journey. My grandparents, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, Justiss, Gabby, Regan, friends and family from across the United States. I will make you proud! Next stop: Miss USA 👑

When he was in my belly, he’d do a dance for Fast Car. When he was in the NICU, I’d sing this for him & he would relax. Now, he will stop fussing & listen intently when it plays. I can’t wait until he’s older & I can tell him all about his first favorite song. 🩵

Suddenly you were dropped from the stars & placed onto my chest. I have known you in every lifetime; I have loved you since the beginning of time. You are my son, and I am your mama. Born on leap day, which only comes every four years. Four, because you are sacred. You are your ancestors reincarnate— alive & breathing. You’re the next generation of Anishinaabe, and I’m so honored to have been chosen to guide you on your journey through this physical world. Giizagi’in, gizhaweniimin. I love you, you are loved. Niigoziis, my son. Cyrus James Parisien 🩵

It’s 2023. The sexy Indian maiden costume is OUT. Authentic Indigenous representation is IN!!! Please watch & educate yourselves, because what I saw at the Miss USA 2023 State Costume show was a gross misrepresentation of everything contemporary Indigenous culture is about. Sorry, not sorry.

A week ago today, I took my final walk as Miss North Dakota USA. Here is my farewell speech. I was limited on time, and there was no way to thank each and every person who gave me love this year. I have been blessed beyond belief. This whole year was for all of the Indigenous youth— Hope is There. 🤍 I am someone who has faced a significant number of setbacks in my 26 years. Unfortunately, my year as a titleholder was marked significantly by the constant dread of dealing with a drug addicted mother. Such has been most of my life. I could not have done anything I have ever done without the love & support of some incredible people. As Indigenous people, we are stronger together, and I am humbled by the outpouring of moral support that held me up during the most challenging year of my life. For the first time in my life, I don’t know what comes next. However, I know that whatever journey I embark on next, I am surrounded by the love & light of those who have uplifted me. Miigwetch, it has been the highest honor.
