Some might call her spirited. Others might feel inclined to use the term “drama queen.” But whatever the descriptor, we can all agree that Elk is something special. This garrulous gal certainly has a lot to say and isn’t afraid to say it! Perhaps she has theater aspirations or dreams of being the front singer of a band. Watch this video montage with the volume up and you can decide for yourself what her motivation may be. Whatever the case, her theatrical vocalizations only add to her giant charm. Thankfully this Elkstraordinary Mastiff mix was adopted in a home where her vocal contributions are adored!

Please excuse our loud and ear-ratic heartbeats as we introduce this ear-resistible feline! This is Twizzler, an American Curl cat. While Twizzler’s unique curled ears aren’t a common sight in our shelters, he, like all our residents, only wants one thing — a loving home to call his own! So if you’re ready to give this boy a lap to curl into and a heart to purrmanently occupy, we’re all ears! Adopt Twizzler (911014) at our San Diego Campus today! #americancurl #curlcat #americancurlcat #adoptashelteranimal #shelterpets #adoptingashelterpwt

We are grateful Congresswoman @repsarajacob visited us again today to see the newly renovated adoptions building and learn about our capacity challenges and the need for increased veterinary support in the community, such as spay-neuter services. It takes a village to be there for animals and people who love them.

With July Fourth just around the corner, we’re urging pet parents to plan ahead to keep their animals safe during the holiday! Fireworks can frighten pets and cause them to flee. Humane Officers Castro-Roxas and Gomez share the simple steps owners can take now to protect their pets, including microchipping, making sure they have secure collars and up-to-date ID tags, and keeping them securely indoors during celebrations. For additional tips on keeping your pet safe this July Fourth, visit sdhumane.org/protect. ❤️🎆

Did you know that dogs can go into heat and have their first litter as young as 6 months old, and cats as young as 4 months old? Don't let an unplanned litter sneak up on you! Spaying and neutering your pets is the only 100% effective way to prevent unplanned litters, and keep more homeless pets from entering shelters. We offer information about affordable spay/neuter services in San Diego County on our website at sdhumane.org/spay.

Celebrity pet grooming artist @gabrielfeitosagrooming has once again created some iconic trans-fur-mations for our shelter pets! Recently he volunteered his time and talent to care for the dogs at our San Diego Campus. Adoptable dogs Bandana, Fitzgerald, Nova, Floppy and Blazer were treated to a spa day featuring baths and fabulous makeovers! We are incredibly grateful for Gabe’s ongoing commitment to giving deserving dogs a fresh and clean start! If you're interested in meeting dashing pups Bandana (909643), Fitzgerald (909030), Nova (901087), Floppy (894759) or Blazer (857105), visit our San Diego Campus Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Our friend Lauren Coles from @colesflooring and Smooch are here to share some simple steps pet owners can take to protect their pets before the Fourth of July holiday! These include ensuring your pet has a registered microchip and a secure collar with up-to-date ID tags, arranging pet care if you’ll be away and keeping pets securely indoors. Pets often get frightened by the July Fourth celebrations, but these steps will help keep them safe and make it easier for them to reunite with you should they become lost! As a reminder, we are offering FREE microchips at all our campus vaccine clinics through July 3 and waiving reclaim fees for lost pets through July 7.

We have great news! Give Humane, our ninth annual Day of Giving was a resounding success. Thanks to our wonderful animal-loving community and generous match sponsors, more than $770,000 was raised to make a lifesaving difference for pets and wildlife in need. We hope you enjoyed the inspiring animal stories we shared yesterday. If you missed any of them, please scroll down to take a look! As with all of the stories we share here, there are thousands of other animals just like them who will get a second chance because of your support. Thank you for helping us create a more humane world. We couldn't do it without you!

All San Diego Humane Society campuses (including San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside locations) are currently unable to take in owner-surrendered dogs on a walk-in basis, except in cases of emergency that threaten the health of the pet. We currently have record numbers of dogs in care and are seeing an increase in canine respiratory disease. To protect the animals in our care and prevent the spread of disease, we are asking all owners who need to surrender their pets to schedule an appointment by calling 619-299-7012. In the meantime, we are here to help! We have a wide range of tools and resources available that can help you hold onto your pet a little longer or rehome them directly to an adopter. Please browse our available resources at sdhumane.org/supportservices and contact us to let us know how we can help.
