We're closing out the 2023–24 season with Mahler's epic Third Symphony.
This monumental score is particularly special to Esa-Pekka Salonen: It launched his international conducting career at age 25 when he jumped in as a last-minute replacement at the Philharmonia Orchestra for none other than Michael Tilson Thomas!
Salonen had never heard Mahler Three but quickly perused the score & decided to do it. He went to London & conducted the piece, & suddenly, he realized he was a conductor. “Mahler Three has a special place in my memory & my heart," he said. "And also, in a funny way, it connects me with Michael from early on. We both find this very amusing that this happened since I eventually took over after him here.”
